MTG Modern Horizons 3: Orzhov Commander Dominates with Vampires, Angels, and Demons

Shilgengar, also known as Sire of Famine, is a recently introduced Orzhov Commander in Modern Horizons 3, known for its cunning abilities. This creature combines traditional vampire tactics with the use of sacrifices and tokens, making it a formidable force that excels in utilizing graveyard mechanics to dominate the battlefield.

Shilgengar, a Legendary Orzhov Creature, requires a casting cost of 3BB. With a flying ability and a power and toughness of 6/6, it is capable of dealing significant damage to enemies in battle. However, its true potential requires some preparation.

Shilgengar can be summoned by paying three mana in either black or white, and will bring back all Creatures from your grave onto the battlefield with a finality counter, allowing them to fight for you once more.

With Shilgengar, you have the ability to sacrifice your Creatures and generate a Blood token. This is a vampire-inspired ability that permits you to use 1 mana to sacrifice the token, discard a card, and draw a new one.

The Shilgengar’s ultimate power synergizes perfectly with the discard and draw mechanic, allowing you to stock your graveyard with Creatures to be revived all at once while also keeping your hand full.

Moreover, in the event that an Angel Creature is sacrificed, Shilgengar will generate a quantity of Blood tokens equivalent to the Creature’s toughness instead of only one.

Fortunately, even though Shilgengar’s mana value consists solely of black mana, its ultimate cost makes it a perfect fit for the Orzhov faction. This allows players who choose Shilgengar as their Commander to incorporate a variety of formidable angels and angel token-producing spells, such as Entreat the Angels and the recently released Decree of Justice.

To fully utilize this Commander’s abilities, decks should have a diverse selection of Angel Creatures that can be used as sacrifice material. While initially focusing on sacrificing token Creatures may seem like a good strategy, Shilgengar’s ultimate effect is most effective when the graveyard contains a mix of non-token Creatures that can be summoned back to cause chaos.
