To enhance the Grand Larceny deck of MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction, modify it in a way that allows you to use your opponent’s strongest cards to your advantage.
At MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Gonti, Canny Acquisitor leads the Grand Larceny Commander deck, making it more affordable to steal your opponents’ spells and equipping you with the necessary tools to do so. We will guide you in constructing a more efficient deck centered around Gonti, eliminating any ineffective cards and optimizing the strengths of Grand Larceny.
Must-haves: Tasha, the Witch-Queen and Hoarding Broodlord
Tasha, the Witch-Queen
Tasha’s contributions to Gonti’s game plan make it an integral part of the deck. The ability to summon flying creatures to defend or attack against opponents is a clever passive ability, and Tasha’s loyalty abilities discourage opponents from casting any Instant or Sorceries, as they can easily be turned to your advantage.
Hoarding Breadlord
This card offers a dual benefit to Grand Larceny. Firstly, it allows you to search for and exile any desired card, which can then be cast at a later time. Additionally, any spell cast from exile will also have the ability to convoke.
This Creature not only provides access to your key cards, but also reduces the cost of the rest of the game, enabling your Creatures to significantly discount your major plays.
Budget Options for Upgrading Your Deck
Rogue’s Passage
While the cost of 4 mana may seem steep for this ability, it is well worth it to have the power to make a chosen Creature unblockable at just the right moment.
Court of Locthwain
The Court of Locthwain grants you the power to draw cards from your opponent’s deck during each of your upkeeps, allowing you to cast them as long as you remain the monarch.
Additionally, the ease of keeping or reclaiming the monarch token is enhanced by the unblockable abilities of some of your Creatures. This allows you to inflict damage on any player who takes the token from you.
Rogue Class
The Rogue Class is well-suited for Grand Larceny as it offers a diverse range of abilities that improve with each level. Its evasion and the power to exile and cast opponent’s cards make it a valuable addition to Gonti’s strategy.
Toski, Bearer of Secrets
This being functions in partnership with Gonti, greatly increasing the benefits of inflicting harm upon your opponents. By having both of these cards on the battlefield, you will have a plethora of options available to you each turn, with a full hand and access to your opponents’ cards to cast.
Assassin’s Trophy
This Instant, when cast at the right moment, is a reliable and uncomplicated way to eliminate any challenge in Golgari colors (green and black mana).
Premium Cards to Upgrade Your Deck
Dauthi Voidwalker
The Dauthi Voidwalker is a valuable creature that effectively stops opponents from using their graveyard and can also be used as a targeted theft for a mere two black mana at opportune moments.
Praetor’s Grasp
This Sorcery acts as a tutor, but instead of searching your own deck, it allows you to search another player’s deck for a card. This not only eliminates a potential threat, but also grants you control over it.
Agent of Treachery
The ability to steal a target permanent of your choice is incredibly versatile, but this card truly excels as a value engine. It consistently draws cards due to the effortless control Grand Larceny players have over three of their opponents’ permanents.
Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor
Gix serves as both a useful social tool and a dependable means of drawing cards during the early stages of the game. As you accumulate enough mana, Gix becomes an exceptional advantage. Although it does not take advantage of Gonti’s cost reduction, its potent abilities make it a valuable addition to this deck.
Cards to Cut
Void Attendant
Despite its uniqueness, this Eldrazi does not fit well in this deck as it requires a complicated process to provide minimal benefits. The payoff of a colorless mana token is often not worth the initial effort put into creating the Creature.
Prismatic Lens
You have access to more effective methods of ramp and mana fixing than this rock.
The Mimeoplasm
Despite being a decent Commander option, it is more advantageous to focus on stealing resources from opponents rather than investing in this expensive Creature that lacks natural combat evasion.
Plasm Capture
Exploring unique counterspells is always worthwhile, however the mana cost of this one becomes even more difficult to justify now that Mana Drain has been reprinted in the Breaking News bonus sheet of Outlaws of Thunder Junction.
Chaos Wand
Despite its initial mana value of 3 and an additional activation cost of 4, this card is still too costly to justify keeping here on a turn-by-turn basis.
Whirler Rogue
It is more effective to use Creatures with inherent unblockable abilities and cards like Rogue’s Passage rather than relying on this potentially one-time use sacrifice ability.
Bladegriff prototype
Allowing an opponent to decide the fate of this otherwise beneficial flying Creature hinders its effectiveness.
Curse of the Swine
As this card has an X-cost, you will probably have enough mana for a significant effect. However, since your goal is to deal unblocked damage, the fact that this removal leaves behind Creatures is not ideal.
