MTG’s Latest Secret Lair Features a Powerful D&D Creature

The Magic: The Gathering x D&D Secret Lair drops will not only feature Baldur’s Gate 3’s heroes, but also one of the most notorious enemies from the tabletop RPG. This enemy will have multiple cards dedicated to its unique attacks.

The perfect combination of D&D and MTG, both owned by the same company, creates the ultimate crossover. This has led to the inclusion of fan-favorite characters such as Drizzt and Elminster in the card game, along with notorious foes and formidable creatures like Bulettes and Mind Flayers.

Although Beholders have previously been featured in Magic: The Gathering, they are set to take center stage once again in the upcoming Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder II Secret Lair drop. Fans on the MagicTCG Reddit are eagerly anticipating the reimagining of existing cards to reflect the abilities of the Beholder.

“One user expressed their desire to see more Secret Lairs like this, stating that all of the cards were flavorful, had excellent artwork, were playable, and could easily fit into a single Commander Deck.”

In addition to showcasing Karazakir, the Eye Tyrant, the game also includes rebranded versions of Snuff Out, Defile, Oubliette, Fling, and Fire Covenant, now known as Beholder’s Death Ray, Beholder’s Enervation Ray, Beholder’s Paralyzing Ray, Beholder’s Telekinetic Ray, and Beholder’s Disintegration Ray.

Some D&D players who have had unfortunate luck have experienced the negative effects of these powers, as noted by one fan who pointed out the accurate depiction of the powers’ impact on gameplay in the card text: “The saving throw flavor texts truly capture the essence of the powers.”

Some people are still hoping for the Secret Lair to center on characters from the Baldur’s Gate 3 video game, despite it being a D&D-themed product. One user expressed their opinion, stating, “These are cool, but I was expecting more reprints of characters from BG instead of 10 different beholder arts. Perhaps there will be more to come, but for now, that’s my hope.”

The Secret Lairs for D&D include two characters from Baldur’s Gate 3, specifically Astarion and Karlach on the cards. However, the remaining Origin characters, such as Shadowheart, Gale, Wyll, and Lae’zel, were noticeably absent, much to the disappointment of fans.

The MTG x D&D crossover features two Secret Lairs with a Beholder theme, giving players multiple choices for creating a gimmick Commander deck centered around the dreaded Eye Tyrants. This deck can include potent removal abilities that mirror the destructive nature of these creatures in the tabletop RPG.
