As the seventh season of the My Hero Academia anime approaches, certain scenes are being criticized for “missing the point”.
The highly anticipated debut of My Hero Academia Season 7, set to release in 2024, has sparked some criticism from the fandom due to the recent trailer release. Fans are now calling out the studio behind it, Bones, for their art direction.
In the preview for the upcoming season, a shot of Shigaraki preparing to battle Star and Stripe is shown while he is soaring through the sky. Although this scene is highly anticipated, the animation does not accurately capture the intensity of the impending fight. Despite the high altitude, the sky is filled with soft clouds and remains a vibrant shade of blue.
Despite the anticipation of a grand battle about to unfold, the anime fails to accurately capture the intensity and atmosphere of the moment. The gravity of the situation is not effectively portrayed, as the background appears no different from any other mundane scene.
The funniest part is how they’re not even adapting the source material properlyIn the manga, the reason why the sky is darker and the clouds are lower is to convey how they’re high in the sky. The anime completely misses the point entirely, there’s no excuse for this pic.twitter.com/fDNl2cMIv0

The manga’s stunning portrayal of the scene adds to the challenge of digesting it. Through its depiction, the seriousness of the fight and the threat posed by Shigaraki are effectively conveyed. The sky in the manga is notably darker, with fewer clouds, as both Shigaraki and Star and Stripe are shown to be high up in the sky.
Despite being a popular anime, My Hero Academia has faced criticism for its art, specifically in regards to the sky backgrounds. The series contains numerous scenes featuring these backgrounds.
The previous season of the show received widespread criticism from fans. Many viewers were disappointed by the manga’s art, which they felt did not effectively portray the darker moments, particularly Shigaraki’s awakening scenes.
A few fans expressed their thoughts on this matter through various social media platforms. One individual tweeted on X, stating, “The art direction lacks consistency.”
A different user also commented, “Despite being high up in the clouds, they’re still at the same level as the clouds. It’s quite absurd how the anime consistently avoids portraying anything other than a bright blue and cloudy sky.”
Upon comparison, someone remarked that MHA was similar to another one of Bones’ anime, Mob Psycho 100, and expressed disbelief, stating, “I can’t believe this was created by the same studio as Mob Psycho. The art direction is completely different.”
Studios will often assess the audience’s response to their work by releasing trailers and teasers, and may make adjustments to the main series to meet expectations. It is possible that Bones will also take into consideration their viewers’ feedback and make slight changes to the anime’s art style.
In addition to MHA Season 7, Bones has also announced the release of My Hero Academia: You’re Next movie. In the manga, My Hero Academia Chapter 421 reveals that Deku has lost his Quirk. The next installment, set to be released soon, will continue the story and reveal what happens next for Deku.
