My Hero Academia Breaks Franchise Record with New Movie Release

My Hero Academia Breaks Franchise Record with New Movie Release

My Hero Academia is having a successful year, and the recently released movie has already raised the bar for anime in Japan.

During a high point for the franchise, the release of My Hero Academia: You’re Next is imminent. The manga’s Chapter 430 marked the end of Deku and Class 1-A’s story, while Season 7 began the battle against Shigaraki that will lead to the series’ finale.

On August 2, 2024, You’re Next made its debut in Japanese theaters with a highly successful opening night. The film’s success is predicted to continue throughout the weekend, making it a major milestone for the franchise.

According to Nakayasee, an analyst for anime box office results, My Hero Academia: You’re Next earned 440 million yen (approximately $3 million) on its opening night. Based on its current trajectory, the film is expected to exceed one billion yen (around $6.8 million) by Monday.

In comparison, the previous anime movie, World Heroes’ Mission, earned 120 million less than My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission did on its opening night in 2021. This significant increase in earnings for the fourth film in the franchise is a testament to the strong fanbase and current popularity of My Hero Academia.

Despite Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle bringing in 2.23 billion yen in its first weekend in Japan, it falls short of the overall box office numbers for the year. However, as a highly anticipated film sequel to a beloved anime show, the demand for it was on a completely different level.

Similar to its predecessors, You’re Next follows a subplot that has Deku and his companions facing off against Dark Might, a malevolent incarnation of All Might that is connected to a peculiar extraterrestrial metropolis that descends from the heavens. This adds a peculiar and foreboding atmosphere to the anime.

Before traveling overseas, it is expected to have a strong presence in the upcoming months. International viewers will have the opportunity to watch it on October 11, 2024 – after they have recovered from the conclusion of My Hero Academia, of course.
