Despite the release of My Hero Academia season 7 episode 7, the anime received criticism for Burnin’s remark about Endeavor’s past actions as the current No. 1 Hero. As viewers are aware, Enji Todoroki had a fixation on having a child with both fire and ice abilities, leading to him mistreating his family and pushing them beyond their capabilities.
Regrettably, it was only in the recent events of the story that the Todoroki family’s truth was disclosed to the public. As a result, the revelation of Endeavor’s abuse towards his family was a relatively fresh issue to the public. Nonetheless, Burnin’s remark on the matter being “family problems”caused uproar among fans, dismissing the severity of the situation.
How Burnin’s Comment Exposes the Greatest Flaw in Hero Society in My Hero Academia Season 7
In My Hero Academia season 7 episode 8, the Dabi vs. Shoto fight is scheduled to occur, but the previous episode had already laid the groundwork for it. As the anime was building up to the battle, the Flaming Sidekickers each made a remark about their leader, Endeavor.
During this time, Burnin made a comment:
“Even if he’s a smelly old guy with family problems, there were no lies in his work. Past or present!”
It is common knowledge among My Hero Academia fans that the problems within the Todoroki family were not simply “family issues,”but rather instances of real abuse. Therefore, when Burnin made a comment diminishing the abuse suffered by Shoto and Dabi as mere “family problems,”fans spoke out against it.
Despite Burnin possibly having good intentions, her statement essentially meant that Enji Todoroki’s abusive actions towards his family were excusable because he excelled at his job. The focus should not be on Dabi, but rather on how Burnin’s statement disregarded the suffering that the Todoroki family endured because of Enji’s actions.
This was the root issue within the hero society depicted in the My Hero Academia series. As long as heroes adhered to their expected duties, they were praised by the public. However, unbeknownst to the people, a hero could be mistreating their own loved ones.
According to Burnin, Endeavor was a successful hero with a commendable track record. Despite this, he struggled with feelings of inadequacy in comparison to All Might and desired to cultivate a hero who could surpass him. This ultimately resulted in Enji Todoroki mistreating his own family. In essence, the stress he experienced at work carried over into his personal life.
Despite being a member of the hero society, Nana Shimura’s absence had a negative impact as her son became overly strict with her grandson, Tenko Shimura, leading to an abusive dynamic. This raises the question of how many other characters may have had similar backstories had their lives been further explored.
How Fans Reacted to Burnin’s Comment in My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 7
Despite her position as a public figure, Burnin’s comment dismissing family abuse as a less serious issue left fans deeply disappointed. To make matters worse, she made these remarks in front of Shoto and Toya, who were directly impacted by the abuse, causing even more distress among her followers.
“Do you know how sh*tty it is for abuse to be dismissed as ‘family drama’”one fan said.
“Is she wrong tho? Family issues aside, endeavor was an outstanding hero. What he did in the past never even tied in to his hero work so she has a point,”another fan said.
Despite the backlash against Burnin’s comment in My Hero Academia season 7 episode 7, not everyone believed it was necessary to address the issue at that time.
Despite the ongoing war between the heroes and villains in My Hero Academia, fans were unable to overlook the issue of domestic abuse, which had caused devastation and loss of life in their country. It seemed inconsequential in comparison to the larger conflict, but they could not ignore its significance.
“I mean I’d be more focused on the war too but that’s just me ig,”another said.
“Which one of them is actively trying to kill people,”other fan said.
Despite some fans speaking out against Dabi, it remains true that his actions as a villain were far more heinous than those of Endeavor, who had abused his family. While Endeavor’s mistreatment of his family is certainly cruel and could warrant imprisonment, Dabi’s deeds are severe enough to warrant execution.
Therefore, fans were not inclined to engage in a heated debate over Burnin’s comment as there were more pressing matters that required attention.
