My Hero Academia can easily give Invisible Girl a costume (but Horikoshi will never do it)

Although the My Hero Academia manga features numerous characters with distinct quirks, one particular character who comically stands out is the Stealth Hero: Invisible Girl, otherwise known as Toru Hagakure.

Despite remaining invisible for the majority of the series, the character’s appearance was eventually revealed during the Final War Arc in the manga. However, this reveal was not well received by fans.

For a while now, fans were aware that Hagakure’s hero costume involved minimal clothing, allowing her to remain invisible. Therefore, the reveal of her appearance should not have been a surprise to fans. However, when manga creator Kohei Horikoshi showcased the reveal with a provocative color page, it sparked controversy.

Despite the fact that Kohei Horikoshi could have given Hagakure a hero costume a long time ago, his refusal to do so only adds to the suspicion of an underlying motive.

The Importance of Representation in My Hero Academia: A Reflection on Horikoshi’s Treatment of Hagakure

The additional content in volume 40 of My Hero Academia included an illustration of Toru Hagakure in everyday clothing. The accompanying text noted that Hagakure’s invisibility allowed her hero costume to bypass the public decency restrictions enforced by R-rated Hero: Midnight.

Fans can anticipate that Hagakure will receive a hero costume in the near future. However, it is likely that manga creator Kohei Horikoshi will not pursue this storyline as he had ample opportunity to do so in the past, rather than towards the end of the manga series.

As depicted in the anime, numerous characters possess distinctive costumes, with one of the most remarkable being Mirio Togata, a member of the U.A.’s big 3. His quirk, Permeation, allows him to become intangible and pass through solid objects.

Despite Mirio’s quirk causing his clothes to fall off his body whenever he used it, his hero costume was designed to withstand its effects and remained intact.

Despite her unique hero costume, Mt. Lady from My Hero Academia has been observed growing in size along with her costume. Therefore, there was no reason why Horikoshi could not have created a similar costume for her that defied logic. The manga creator could have effortlessly introduced a costume that made Hagakure invisible, just like the character herself.

Despite this, Horikoshi did not put in much effort to create a unique costume for Hagakure, implying that he may have had a different intention, possibly to cater to fans with fanservice. This was particularly noticeable through the use of color pages and Hagakure’s subsequent appearances in the manga.

Fans are aware of Kohei Horikoshi’s admiration for Marvel and DC Comics, renowned for their superhero stories which often include characters with the ability to turn invisible. While Horikoshi could have drawn inspiration from any of these heroes’ costumes for Hagakure’s design, he opted for her to remain without a costume.

Hence, given that the manga series is approaching its conclusion, it is highly likely that the additional illustration was simply intended to appease fans. Nonetheless, it is possible that Horikoshi may never incorporate the hero costume into the actual main plot.
