Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, shares his perspective on the significance of heroes and discusses his top two heroes.
After a decade-long journey, the My Hero Academia manga will come to an end in a matter of weeks. The anime, which takes place in a world where 80% of the population possesses unique abilities known as “quirks”, follows the journeys of young heroes striving to protect society from malicious villains.
During an interview about his popular series, My Hero Academia, creator Kohei Horikoshi shared his thoughts on the concept of heroes. He mentioned his editor and Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, as inspirations for his work. Additionally, as he approaches his 30s, Horikoshi further elaborates on the significance of heroes in his life.
As he reflects on his journey, he notes that in the beginning, he saw heroes as individuals who were on a higher level than himself, such as Oda-sensei (the creator of One Piece) or fictional characters like Goku from Dragon Ball. However, as he reached his thirties, his perspective shifted and he came to value the support and assistance of those around him, which aligns with the themes of My Hero Academia.
My gratitude has been increasing for those who lend a helping hand or provide words of encouragement. One person in particular, my editor Imamura-san, has been a tremendous source of support. I have come to view individuals like him, who offer assistance in our daily lives, as heroes as well. Therefore, I believe that anyone, including those who support me directly, can be considered a hero.
It comes as no surprise to fans that one fan comments, “The portrayal of a hero in MHA is truly exceptional, and this was demonstrated flawlessly.”
According to another, anyone, regardless of their size or status, can become a hero if they make the effort to do so.
A different follower adds, “It is a lovely touch that this line is included in the manga. Authors pour their own experiences into their creations.”
