My Hero Academia Outshines One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen in Key Category

The sales record of August 2024 demonstrates that My Hero Academia has outpaced other Shonen titans like One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen in recent weeks.

Oricon’s recently released manga sales data from Japan for the period of August 5 to September 1 reveals astounding results. Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia topped the charts with a remarkable 678,672 physical copies sold, marking a significant 68% increase compared to previous month’s figures.

Following closely is Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yuusuke Nomura’s acclaimed sports manga Blue Lock, which saw a notable surge in sales since July 2024, demonstrating a 110% increase with 346,039 physical copies sold, although this is still lower than its prior sales.

Gege Akutami’s hit series Jujutsu Kaisen follows, with 246,550 copies sold, though this reflects a concerning 78% decline in sales. This drop is surprising given the manga’s recent popularity.

One Piece also exhibited unexpected results, as despite delivering one of its most acclaimed arcs in nearly 30 years, Eiichiro Oda’s epic saw a dip in sales with only 186,113 physical copies sold.

In contrast to the declines experienced by fan favorites like One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen, other titles saw remarkable success in August 2024. Chainsaw Man returned to the top 10 with 190,822 copies sold, alongside Katainaka no Ossan, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Sakamoto Days, which also experienced noteworthy sales.

Notably, My Hero Academia is leading the sales charts for manga volumes as well. The series’ Volume 41 achieved impressive sales of 339,959 physical copies, far surpassing Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 27’s 105,227 and One Piece Volume 109’s 89,991 copies sold.

A contributing factor to My Hero Academia’s exceptional sales may be the conclusion of the manga in August. Jujutsu Kaisen is on a similar trajectory, with its finale scheduled for September 30, 2024, which could lead to increasing sales for the series in the coming months.

Looking ahead, One Piece fans can anticipate exciting developments as the manga is set to enter the highly awaited Elbaf Arc.
