Opening Events of My Hero Academia Season 7 Episode 8: Dabi’s Survival Revealed

The eighth episode of My Hero Academia season 7 opens with Dr. Kyudai Garaki, who is currently incarcerated, conversing with a prison guard about the ongoing war. The focus then turns to the scene from the previous episode, where Shoto Todoroki and Endeavor’s assistants come face to face with Dabi. Dabi proceeds to divulge his backstory to Shoto, describing his survival of the Sekoto Peak fire and transformation into the villain known as Dabi.

The flashback opens with a distressed young Toya at Sekoto Peak, struggling to control his out-of-control quirk. In a desperate attempt to escape the flames, Toya falls into a nearby river. The scene then shifts to Dr. Garaki recounting Toya’s past to an officer, emphasizing his troubled nature since birth. A quick glimpse reveals a mysterious man in a hat (presumably AFO) discovering the injured and unconscious Toya, alluding to his eventual transformation into Dabi.

The focus of My Hero Academia season 7 episode 8 then turns to Toya, who is now older and waking up in a hospital. He is perplexed by his survival and is then informed by other children that he has been in a coma for three years. A guard and a computerized voice inform him that he is not allowed to go back home.

The voice reveals that it required immense determination to heal him, and his body, which had suffered great damage, is now unable to withstand the effects of his quirk. As a result, his pain tolerance and reflexes have decreased significantly. Heartbroken, Toya is informed that in order to fully recover, he must remain with them. However, he adamantly refuses and flees.

According to Dr. Garaki, even “the man with absolute control”(presumably AFO) was unable to keep him contained. He clarifies that the facility was designed to produce backup vessels for AFO’s contingency plan in case Shigaraki was unsuccessful. Dabi was deemed a failed experiment, with Garaki cautioning the officer about his wild tendencies.

The story depicts Dabi’s return to his home. Garaki confesses that they had intentionally let him escape, anticipating his death within a month due to his frail condition. Yet, Dabi manages to survive. During a discussion with Garaki, he admits that he was aware of Garaki’s role in his rescue, causing Garaki to understand that Dabi’s resentment towards Endeavor was the driving force behind his survival.

The focus turns to Dabi and Shoto, as Dabi discloses that he returned to his home with the hope that his apparent demise would bring about some transformation. However, he was disheartened to find that there was no change, prompting his transformation.

In the eighth episode of season 7 of My Hero Academia, the story shifts back to the present where Dabi readies himself to confront Shoto. Dabi proclaims that he has diligently trained to improve his fire abilities since his decision to confront Endeavor, and as a result, he has reached a point where he no longer feels any pain even when his body is engulfed in flames.

Shoto comprehends Dabi’s suicidal intentions as Garaki comments on how even the most notorious villain, AFO, disavows Dabi and labels him as a frenzied inferno of destruction. As Dabi prepares to engulf everything in flames, Shoto recognizes the intensity of Dabi’s heat surpassing his own and prepares to intervene. Flashbacks unveil how Dabi managed to increase the intensity of his flames despite his frail physical state.

Despite Endeavor’s sidekicks providing cover, Dabi continues to use Endeavor’s Flashfire Fist and Hell Spider techniques against Shoto, expressing his frustration with the young hero. Shoto, however, is able to survive the attack and retaliates with a new move he designed specifically to counter Dabi’s speed and power.

Shoto clarifies that he devised this technique by merging his two quirks in order to counteract Dabi’s fiery abilities. A flashback reveals Shoto’s determination to defeat Dabi and his demonstration of the new move to Deku. He then utilizes his Flashfire Fist Phosphor to attack Dabi, who withstands the attack. However, Shoto is only able to sustain the stance for a brief period, causing him to lose the use of Phosphor.
