The latest chapter of My Hero Academia, chapter 418, was published on April 1, 2024. It featured the reappearance of All for One, who took the form of a vestige and continued to torment Tomura Shigaraki, hindering his efforts to start anew. With Tomura now under the control of the villain, can Deku rescue him?
The chapter hinted that All for One may have been responsible for implanting Decay into Tenko (Tomura Shigaraki), as his father regularly informed a mysterious individual about his son’s quirk development. This suggests that Tomura may be irredeemable as long as he possesses the destructive quirk of Decay.
Fans theorize that Deku may possess the ability to remove Tenko’s quirk, ultimately rescuing him from a destiny filled with villainy. However, this process would not simply involve removing the quirk, as Deku may also potentially acquire the decay quirk himself. This could potentially lead to the series ending with Deku possessing a new quirk.

The Secret Behind Deku’s Sacrifice: Uncovering the Truth about the Decay Quirk in My Hero Academia
In chapter 418 of My Hero Academia, the moment of truth began as Tenko prepared to unleash his quirk. He held his dog close as Deku rushed to his aid, but it was too late. Tragically, Tenko’s quirk Decay activated and resulted in the death of his beloved pet.
Ultimately, Tenko’s sister emerged from the house to check on him and it appeared that the villain’s survival was unlikely. However, Deku intervened and put himself in harm’s way to protect the villain’s sister from decaying. Tomura questioned Deku’s actions, wondering why he would sacrifice himself for another. Deku simply responded that he had seen Tomura crying.
Following that, a short flashback was depicted, where Tomura’s face lit up upon hearing one of his friends suggest that he should play the role of All Might in their game. However, he quickly snapped back to reality and continued to proclaim that he was destined to be a villain. Despite this, there were moments where he seemed to have turned a new leaf, until a distant memory of Kotoro Shimura, Tenko’s father, resurfaced.
During the flashback, he was conversing with an unknown individual who repeatedly inquired about Tenko’s quirk manifestation. As the flashback concluded, Shimura was suddenly consumed by a massive All for One that appeared out of nowhere, while being mocked by the entity.
The chapter may have suggested that Tomura Shigaraki’s transformation into a villain was not solely fueled by his hatred, but also by his powerful quirk, Decay. Additionally, it was revealed that the manifestation of Decay within him may have been influenced by someone else, potentially All for One himself.
Like Aoyama, who also received his quirk from All for One, Tomura was revealed as the traitor of U.A. High School when Invisible Girl overheard his parents discussing their connection to All for One. All for One had bestowed Tomura with his quirk and forced him to divulge information about the heroes in return. It is possible that Tomura was also gifted with the quirk of Decay by All for One, without the knowledge of anyone else.
Therefore, the sole solution to potentially saving Tenko at this moment would be to remove his quirk, Decay. The only hero brave enough to take on such a dangerous task is Izuku Midoriya, also known as Deku. By erasing Decay from Tomura and thwarting All for One’s pursuit of him, Deku could potentially bring an end to the series by sacrificing Tomura’s life. This outcome suggests that My Hero Academia may not conclude with Deku as a hero without a quirk.
