Naruto in 90s anime style has fans switching loyalty from Pierrot

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Naruto in a 90s anime style animation, considering that the series was released in October 2002, close to that time period. However, viewers may be surprised by the noticeable variations in character designs when they are depicted in the traditional 90s style.

A selection of characters from Naruto were posted in 90s anime style by a Reddit user (@bouyan8). The group included prominent figures from the franchise, as well as a depiction of Naruto’s kekkai genkai in the same style.

Fans from all over the globe once again responded to the Reddit user’s rendition of Naruto in a 90s anime aesthetic. While many praised the updated appearance of Naruto and suggested that the series should have stuck with it, others brought attention to the hidden meaning behind these throwback character designs.

The 90s anime style of Naruto features the main character, Naruto Uzumaki, who was both the jinchuriki of the Nine-Tail Beast and the Seventh Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village. Following him on the list was Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village and widely considered to be the strongest kunoichi in the series.

Ranked third was the Uchiha traitor, known for his selfless devotion to his brother, Itachi Uchiha. Following him was the formidable duo of Kiba Inuzuka and his loyal canine companion, Akamaru. In fifth place, we see the return of the series’ main character, Naruto Uzumaki, rendered in a unique art style.

Kakashi Hatake, the captain of the renowned Team 7 and the copy ninja of the Hidden Leaf Village, was also known as the sixth member. He possessed a unique design that closely resembled the highly coveted kekkai genkai of the Uchiha clan, the Sharingan.

It was impossible for fans not to admire the visually stunning designs of these characters. The 90s animation gained popularity for its sharp aesthetics, which were highly praised by anime enthusiasts, just like the designs shared by the Reddit user. A few fans even expressed a preference for the sleek designs of the 90s style.

A fan noticed a notable alteration in the character Kiba Akamura and his dog’s breed. In this particular animation style, the breed of Kiba’s dog, Akamura, differed from his usual depiction and resembled more of a Great Pyrenees. Furthermore, another fan observed that the art style bore a resemblance to the Ghibli movies rather than the 90s.

“Uh oh I think I like this more tbh”said the user @gorlock666

“The sharingan looks really cool.. and Akamaru basically change it’s dog breed (assuming it’s Kiba without his face mark and added whiskers)”said the user @Agravating-Lead29

“WHY DOES THIS LOOK LIKE GHIBLI??? I NEEEEEEEEED”said the user @Living_Committee869

The Tsunade character design was a favorite among fans, as it showcased more refined facial expressions typical of 90s style. However, some fans were perplexed by the third character design, which seemed to combine features of both Sasuke Uchiha, the deuteragonist of the series, and Itachi. Ultimately, it was confirmed to be Itachi, as the background featured a swarm of crows.

“That tsunade is so much more beautiful”said the user @Adventurous_Topic202

“wait is that Itachi or Sasuke on the 3rd pic? he looks like Chrollo Lucilfer”

Despite the elephant in the room, some fans openly criticized the artist responsible for these character designs, speculating that it may have been created by Artificial Intelligence (AI). With the widespread availability of AI in recent years, there were some fans who were not pleased with this development. In addition, there were also those who voiced their disapproval of the character design for Itachi, which they felt did not accurately depict his original appearance.

“Naruto manga debuted in 1999, so it already is in 90’s artstyle. Also f*ck Ai Art”said the user @Sacrednoirart

“Ew, AI.”said the user @Plain_Bunny

“Look how they massacred my boy Itachi”said the user @Deep_Grass_6250
