National Assembly to Review Perjury Accusations Against Kim Joo-young

On November 22, the National Assembly announced that a petition submitted on November 12, calling for an examination of perjury allegations against Kim Joo-young, has been forwarded to the Environment and Labor Committee (ENVI) for review.

This petition will be assessed in conjunction with another significant petition concerning the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s decision to revoke HYBE’s designation as a “Best Employer.” This latter petition was also submitted to the National Assembly and has gathered considerable attention.

Hanni from NewJeans

The individual behind the petition, identified as A, alleges that Kim Joo-young provided false testimony during her appearance before the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee on October 15. A has invoked the National Assembly Testimony and Evidence Law, seeking accountability for the alleged perjury. Notably, A is not affiliated with the NewJeans fan community.

Details of the Allegation

A contends that Kim Joo-young’s testimony concerning the incident involving Hanni of NewJeans was misleading. During the session, Kim Joo-young was called as a witness, and Hanni provided reference testimony regarding the so-called “Hanni bullying incident.”

Contentions of Perjury

The crux of A’s accusation revolves around an internal document known as the “Weekly Music Industry Report,” recently released to the public. A claims that the document’s recipient list explicitly included Kim Joo-young, who was serving as the CHRO at the time it was created. Despite having knowledge of the document, Kim allegedly refrained from mentioning it in her testimony, in which she purportedly advocated for the prevention of human rights violations and adherence to a ‘respectful behavior code.’ A asserts that this omission constitutes perjury.

Petition against HYBE

Furthermore, the petition to rescind HYBE’s designation as a “Best Employer,” which garnered over 50,000 signatures as of November 9, has also been submitted to the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee. This growing concern reflects ongoing scrutiny of workplace practices within the entertainment industry.

As the National Assembly prepares to address these critical matters, the implications for both Kim Joo-young and HYBE remain to be seen, particularly in the context of public trust and corporate responsibility.
