Jaemin’s first solo photo exhibition, titled “NARCISSISM – JAEMIN 1st EXHIBITION”, took place from June 29 until July 31. Originally scheduled to conclude on July 19, the exhibition was prolonged as a result of overwhelming enthusiasm from his fans.
The showcase, centered on the concept of “NARCISSISM”, presented pieces that revolved around Jaemin, members of NCT DREAM, and diverse surroundings. These pieces embodied Jaemin’s loving outlook and distinct emotions, captured since he first delved into photography in 2018, spanning over a period of seven years.
Last month, SM Entertainment, the agency of Jaemin, made an announcement on the fan community platform Weverse that several works would be available for sale. These included three photos of landscapes in Virginia, USA, and Vietnam, priced at 850,000 won each, and eight portraits of NCT DREAM members, priced at 550,000 won each. After the announcement, there was some public disapproval due to the high prices.
It is common for singers to sell their artwork, and Solbi is a well-known figure in this realm. Since her first exhibition in 2012, she has consistently showcased her paintings. Despite being a singer for 12 years, Solbi revealed on KBS Cool FM’s ‘Park Myung-soo’s Radio Show’ in 2021 that she earns more from her paintings than her music career.
Despite facing criticism for allegedly exploiting fans for financial gain through his exhibition, there are various factors that are being overlooked. Jaemin has pledged to donate all proceeds from the exhibition as per his own wishes. Furthermore, the entrance fee was set at a modest 10,000 won and the exhibition was extended to accommodate fans who may have been unable to attend. The decision to sell framed works was also made in response to requests from fans.
Fans who purchase Jaemin’s pieces will be given both his autograph and a certificate of authenticity. These works are exclusively available to members of the NCT DREAM fan club, making them highly valuable as they are from Jaemin’s debut exhibition as a photographer. The addition of his autograph further increases their appeal to fans. If the price is deemed excessive, fans have the option to not make a purchase.
It is considered impolite to assess the worth of another person’s work. Jaemin has consistently demonstrated his love and fascination for photography, utilizing six different types of cameras according to the circumstances. He went as far as purchasing a specialized refrigerator to prevent any mold growth on his cameras. The pieces showcased in this exhibit showcase his dedication and the distinct viewpoint he has cultivated over years of practicing photography.
