In light of recent graphic allegations of sexual assault against Neil Gaiman, the acclaimed writer has taken to his blog to share his perspective, which may be distressing for some readers.
The accusations first emerged in July 2024, as part of Tortoise Media’s four-part podcast series titled Master: the allegations against Neil Gaiman. This series presented claims from five women, with three additional accusers coming forward in the subsequent month. Many of these women reported that their previously consensual relationships with Gaiman turned violent and non-consensual.
Further reports surfaced, most notably from Vulture, wherein eight women elaborated on their experiences. As a consequence of these serious allegations, Gaiman’s various TV and film projects have faced significant delays.
Neil Gaiman Responds to Allegations
On January 14, Gaiman published a detailed response on his online journal, categorically denying the allegations. He expressed his horror at the stories circulating, stating, “Over the past many months, I have watched the stories circulating the internet about me with horror and dismay.” He explained his silence was due to respect for those sharing their experiences and to avoid exacerbating the situation with misinformation.
He described his efforts to maintain a degree of privacy while feeling compelled to address the claims. Gaiman asserted that the allegations are based on only partial truths, and he firmly stated, “I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.” Instead of acknowledging sexual assault, he admitted to shortcomings in his conduct, indicating that he could have approached his relationships with greater care.
“I was emotionally unavailable while being sexually available, self-focused, and not as thoughtful as I could or should have been,”he reflected. Gaiman emphasized his regret over being careless with the emotions of those involved.
In his closing statements, he asserted, “Some of the horrible stories now being told simply never happened, while others have been so distorted from what actually took place that they bear no relationship to reality.” He committed to owning any mistakes he may have made, while strongly rejecting any characterization that misrepresents him or admissions of acts he did not commit.
Representatives for Gaiman have responded to claims made in the Vulture report, emphasizing that his relationships were consensual and denying allegations of sexual misconduct in the presence of his son.
In light of these allegations, Gaiman’s creative projects are reportedly in limbo. While a third season of Good OmensThe Graveyard Book due to the ongoing allegations.
Backlash Follows Gaiman’s Statement
Since Gaiman shared his blog post, he has received heavy backlash. Writer Meg Vondriska took to X/Twitter, stating, “Neil Gaiman’s statement is so f**king heinous.” She criticized his denial and his framing of himself as someone in the process of ‘learning’ and ‘growing’ while simultaneously denying any abuse.

Another writer, Ben Stephens, also shared his thoughts, succinctly expressing his dissatisfaction toward Gaiman’s response. He accompanied his sentiment with a GIF that echoed his feelings. Author Jared Garrett expanded on his criticism, suggesting that Gaiman’s response demonstrates narcissistic tendencies and a lack of accountability.
Garrett concluded his remarks by stating, “Neil Gaiman should now be prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law in every country, province, territory, and state he abused women in. Then he should be forgotten.”
