Netflix 2023 Anime Movie Scores Near-Perfect on Rotten Tomatoes, But There’s Bad News Ahead

Netflix is soon set to add a highly anticipated film from 2023, but due to distribution constraints, not everyone will be able to access it.

In recent years, Netflix has significantly expanded its anime offerings. Notable titles like One Piece and Terminator Zero are among the major productions the platform is investing in, along with licensed hits such as Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen.

Now, Netflix provides international viewers with access to most Studio Ghibli anime films, as they remain tied to Max in the United States. The latest addition from acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki is on the horizon.

The Boy and the Hero will premiere on Netflix outside Japan and the US on October 7, 2024. This is a significant acquisition for the platform, considering the renowned reputation of Ghibli and Miyazaki’s work.

Unfortunately, the complexities of licensing present challenges in securing a global deal for such a major title. Warner Bros holds streaming rights in the US for productions from Ghibli, and the Japanese market operates independently.

However, audiences in other regions will have a convenient opportunity to catch up on or revisit this modern classic. In line with expectations, The Boy and the Heron has received a commendable 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its broad acclaim.

Reviewer Jasmine Valentine may not have completely adored the film, but acknowledges that even a middling effort from Hayao Miyazaki stands out among his peers. “If Hayao Miyazaki had the film equivalent of a Greatest Hits album, it would be The Boy and the Heron,” her review notes.

With the legendary filmmaker having returned from retirement once again, it may be years before his next project is unveiled. Therefore, we should savor this film as much as possible. Be sure to explore our upcoming anime guide for information on other exciting releases.
