After just one season, Netflix has cancelled Dead Boy Detectives, causing subscribers to once again question the streaming platform’s decision-making.
The cancellation of Dead Boy Detectives on August 30 is just one of many abrupt endings for new TV shows and movies on the streaming service. This trend has been seen before, such as with the release of the first season of the show back in April.
Although the show faced some obstacles, it eventually made its way to the small screen. It was first ordered as a pilot by Max in 2021, and then received the green light from the same platform before ultimately being acquired by Netflix in 2023.
Despite a strong start (the show debuted on Netflix’s Top 10 TV chart and remained there for three consecutive weeks), the show experienced a significant decrease in viewership, only garnering 1.8 million views in its third week.
Despite some criticism, Dead Boy Detectives has been highly successful. As of now, the supernatural series boasts a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% score on the Popcornmeter.
The series centers around two young boys who join forces in the afterlife to unravel supernatural mysteries. It is based on the Sandman franchise and the characters were first introduced in The Sandman #25 comic book.
The recent announcement of the cancellation of Dead Boy Detective has only added fuel to the fire for the devoted fanbase, who continue to criticize Netflix for their decision to end the show.
One X user pointed out that Netflix had given the green light for a second season before the release of season one, yet they still chose to cancel it.
Another person stated that it was necessary to discuss the impact this is having not only on viewership, but also on the careers of actors.
Another person went to the extent of claiming, “There’s no real reason to watch new shows on streaming services anymore, is there?”
“Another user noted that it must be disheartening for crew members of a Netflix show to almost certainly know it will be cancelled.”
In a tweet, one user stated, “Jokes aside, to anyone reading this, it is not worth spending a single cent of your money on Netflix anymore. These individuals are ruining television and disregarding the importance of building fan bases and creating job opportunities.”
