Being a horror fan has never been better, especially for those who have a Netflix subscription. However, the latest Stephen King adaptation on the platform is one of his least frightening stories.
Stephen King’s reputation has become synonymous with some of the greatest horror tales ever written. The Shining, Misery, and Carrie are all beloved by countless horror enthusiasts, and film adaptations of The Monkey and The Long Walk are currently in the works.
In September, Netflix will be adding to its collection of King-inspired content. However, if you’re hoping for a frightening story to be included in the new movie lineup, you may overlook one of his top works.
Released in 1986, Stand By Me is an adaptation of King’s novella The Body, which was published in 1982. Featuring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell, this coming-of-age movie has gained a reputation as one of the greatest films of the 1980s.
The Stand By Me script, known for its combination of youthful exploits and deeper concepts, has undoubtedly had a significant impact on future films in the same genre. Its influence can even be seen in popular television series, such as Stranger Things. Reportedly, when auditioning for roles on the Netflix show, actors were requested to perform readings from the Stand By Me script.
Over the years, Stand By Me has solidified its place as an iconic film of the ’80s, with numerous major TV shows and movies making direct references to its themes and scenes. These include popular shows such as Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Rick and Morty.
As the movie progresses, writer Gordon “Gordie” Lachance reminisces about a summer spent with his closest friends. Together, they embarked on a mission to find a dead body in the Oregon wilderness.
Despite some initial skepticism, Stand By Me quickly won over audiences with its powerful sense of nostalgia and ability to resonate with viewers of all ages. It has since been hailed as one of the greatest adaptations of King’s literature.
Despite being less heavy in comparison to some of his more sinister stories involving vampires, ghosts, and stalkers, this is a must-watch for any fan of King or anyone else.
Netflix subscribers will be able to stream Stand By Me starting September 1, 2024.
