Netflix adds House of the Dragon & Umbrella Academy to its binge-worthy lineup

While popular series such as House of the Dragon and The Umbrella Academy have been at the top of the charts in recent weeks, an older show has surpassed all of its competition since arriving on Netflix.

Last summer, the popularity of the 2011 legal drama Suits soared as it was released on the streaming service, breaking numerous viewership records. The same trend appears to be occurring with Prison Break.

The captivating drama-thriller series, featuring the talents of Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller, aired for four seasons between 2005 and 2009, and then made a comeback with a fifth installment in 2017. This has led to a spike in audience interest, but what could be the reason behind it?

Despite the lead actors being occupied with other endeavors recently, Netflix made all five seasons of Prison Break accessible on July 29.

The series has once again risen in the charts due to its high quality and convenient binge-worthy format. Additionally, the fact that it is available on Hulu has helped its popularity.

According to Nielsen’s streaming ratings for the week of August 5-11, Prison Break accumulated 1.6 billion viewing minutes, placing it in the top spot. The Umbrella Academy, which released its fourth and final season during that week, earned 1.4 billion minutes, coming in second.

Grey’s Anatomy earned 940 million minutes, placing behind Bluey who came in third with 1 billion minutes.

Despite its initial success, House of the Dragon only ranked fifth with 935 million minutes viewed. This decrease in viewership is to be expected, as the Season 2 finale aired on August 4.

Despite its less-than-stellar Season 5, Prison Break continues to be highly acclaimed as one of the best TV shows available. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the show is doing well, especially during a relatively quiet time for new streaming content.

Since its arrival on Netflix, fans both old and new have been eagerly tuning in, with one individual expressing their excitement on X/Twitter by writing, “Thank you Netflix for bringing back Prison Break, I love you!”

“Another person joked, “Prison break is back on Netflix? Looks like it’s time for me to go into hibernation.”A third individual chimed in, stating, “I can finally watch Prison Break on Netflix! I’ve probably seen it 100 times already.”
