Netflix Apologized for “The 8 Show” Subtitle Scandal: Netizens’ Outrage

On the morning of June 4, a spokesperson from Netflix informed media outlet OSEN that they had verified the use of the term ‘East Sea’ by a character in the drama, which was mistakenly translated as ‘Sea of Japan’ in some subtitles. They are currently working on correcting this error. Due to the large number of languages in which they provide subtitles, the content was not thoroughly reviewed. They hope to receive continued interest and feedback from viewers in the future.

There was a dispute surrounding the foreign subtitles of “The 8 Show”which referred to the “East Sea”as the “Sea of Japan”. In the scene where Ryu Jun-yeol sings the national anthem and mentions the “East Sea and Baekdu Mountain”, the Spanish (Latin America) subtitles inaccurately identified it as the “Sea of Japan”.

Despite Netflix’s apology, Korean netizens remained greatly angered and expressed frustration towards the OTT platform for getting something as significant as the national anthem wrong.

Here are a few remarks from online users:

  • Why on earth did they caption it “Sea of Japan”when that’s a Korean actor in a K-drama?
  • How is it possible to inaccurately perform an entire nation’s national anthem? Was there no assessment or oversight?
  • Even the national anthem? Netflix’s credibility has fallen so low
  • It’s ridiculous that something as big as Netflix would make such a mistake
  • Can a mistake be this grave? Who in their right mind would translate a Korean line spoken by a Korean man in a Korean work, singing the Korean national anthem, into “Sea of Japan”?
