Netflix confirms release date for Gundam Seed Freedom anime film

On Friday, August 9, 2024, Netflix announced that the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film will premiere on their streaming service in the United States on Sunday, September 1, 2024. The film was originally released in Japanese theaters in January 2024 and has been available to stream in Japan on both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video since early June 2024.

The Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film was initially released in the United States and Canada through a partnership between Bandai Namco Filmworks and Fathom Events on May 7 and 8, 2024. The film was shown with its original Japanese dub and English subtitles on May 7, and an English dubbed version was shown on May 8.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film finally streams in US on September 1, 2024

The Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film debuted at #1 in the box office in Japan, with a total of 634,182 tickets sold and 1,065,983,130 yen earned in its first three days in theaters. This translates to approximately $7.2 million USD and is the highest three-day opening in box office earnings for the Gundam franchise to date.

As of May 21, 2024, the film had grossed a total of 4,796,455,740 yen, making it the highest-earning Gundam franchise anime film in Japanese history. Its successful theatrical run in Japan ended just a few days later on May 23, ultimately earning around $30.65 million USD.

The movie showcased a diverse ensemble of actors, both familiar and fresh faces, including renowned performers such as Jun Fukuyama, Junichi Suwabe, Ayane Sakura, Tomokazu Seki, Takehityo Koyasu, and others, all of whom had roles in the production. Mitsuo Fukuda, director of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, was brought back to helm the film at Bandai Namco Filmworks. Fukuda also collaborated with his late wife Chiaki Morosawa and Liu Goto on the screenplay. The characters were designed by Hisashi Hirai, with additional contributions from the following staff:

The Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film is one of the components of the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Porject ignited initiative, which was unveiled in 2021. It celebrates the 20th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed anime, scheduled for 2022, and comprises various elements. Among them are a new Mobile Suit Gundam Seed game and the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Eclipse side-story manga series. The film serves as a continuation of the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny television anime series.
