The Netflix series, The Asunta Case, depicts the real-life story of Asunta Yong Fang and her adoptive parents, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra. It has gained attention for its disturbing theories surrounding the motive.
Despite the abundance of new documentaries available for streaming this month, this dramatization has become a favorite among true crime enthusiasts, as it delves into one of the most highly publicized Spanish murder trials in recent history.
The Asunta Case is a real-life account of the events surrounding the death of 12-year-old Asunta Yong Fang in 2013. Despite initially portraying themselves as worried guardians, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra were eventually arrested and charged for the murder.

Despite the parents maintaining their innocence, and Rosario’s death by suicide in prison in 2020, there are still many lingering questions about the true events. However, viewers of the Netflix show have a popular theory that, if proven to be true, could potentially provide a strong motive.
According to the theory, Rosario may have deliberately caused the deaths of her biological parents in order to inherit their wealth. There is speculation surrounding whether Rosario, with the help of her ex-husband, plotted Asunta’s murder in order to gain full control of her parents’ assets, or if Asunta uncovered damaging information about her adoptive parents that ultimately led to her death.
Despite their advanced age, Rosario’s parents, María del Socorro Ortega Romero and Francisco Porto Mella, passed away unexpectedly without any prior illness within a few months of each other – her mother in December 2011 and her father in July 2012.
According to a report by the local newspaper El Correo Gallego, it is estimated that Rosario inherited €1.2 million worth of real estate. The report also mentions that she had her parents cremated without an autopsy shortly after their deaths.
Considering these details, as well as the fact that Asunta was given Lorazepam, a Netflix viewer speculated on Reddit, “I wonder if she also used Lorazepam to poison them. She inherited more than $1 million in real estate from them alone, which would not require such a large amount of the potent drug. Normally, it is prescribed in 1mg doses.”

“I believe they killed both grandma and grandpa in order to obtain their money. Asunta may have either known or suspected something, which led to her being eliminated as well. This is the only explanation that seems plausible to me,”stated one person, with a third adding, “That theory seems quite plausible.”
Some individuals pointed out that Rosario’s marriage to Alfonso ended due to her infidelity, implying that she intended to deceive her lover into eloping with the inheritance she received.
In addition, another individual elaborated on this concept, stating, “It has been suggested in various sources and hinted at on the show that Rosario’s parents left a significant amount of money solely to Asunta. This could have potentially angered Rosario, as she would not have access to the money and could not use it to start a new life after the divorce, possibly with her lover.”
In 2013, Spanish authorities informed El Mundo that they planned to investigate the deaths of Rosario’s parents and a potential financial motive. According to the newspaper, the Civil Guard was aware that her parents did not have enough money to support their affluent lifestyle and were looking into whether Rosario, as the adopted daughter, was entitled to inherit their substantial estate.
Despite this, it should be emphasized that this lead was never officially verified, and any speculations regarding Asunta’s grandparents are unfounded. The sole surviving individual involved in this case, Alfonso, is currently incarcerated at Teixeiro prison in Spain and maintains his innocence.
