Despite its success and rising popularity on Netflix, the award-winning spy thriller still has a lingering issue for its devoted fans.
After the popularity of Fleabag in 2016, Phoebe Waller-Bridge went on to create the beloved British spy series, Killing Eve. The show recently wrapped up its four-season run in 2022, and has now been added to Netflix’s expanding collection of new TV shows. However, fans have a crucial warning for those who are just discovering the series.
Despite receiving critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase throughout its run, the show (starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer) ultimately lost the goodwill of viewers during its final season, despite winning prestigious awards such as BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Emmy.
Undoubtedly, this is something that fans have not forgotten. Even as Killing Eve gains popularity on streaming platforms, viewers continue to laud the show, though they make sure to mention the unsatisfying ending.
“One fan expressed their excitement for the Killing Eve finale, acknowledging that there will be viewers watching for the first time with no idea of what will unfold. Another fan also shared their anticipation for the show, joking about rewatching it on Netflix as if the ending will be different from when it first aired.”
“According to one comment, the writers of Killing Eve Season 4 will never see the pearly gates.”
As the show progressed, Killing Eve was led by different head writers. Season 1 was managed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, followed by Emerald Fennell for Season 2, Suzanne Heathcote for Season 3, and finally Laura Neal for Season 4.
Despite the final episode being criticized for falling into the “bury your gays”trope, fans were able to express their disappointment by rewriting the ending through fanfiction, leaving a sour taste in their mouths after the last season.
Therefore, if you decide to begin your journey with Netflix’s Killing Eve, keep in mind this caution: the ending may not be to your liking.
