Despite Netflix breaking a new record in the streaming platform competition, fans are still expressing disappointment with the content available.
Netflix has surpassed both itself and its competitors by offering the greatest number of streaming exclusives per platform in its series lineup. According to a report from The Wrap, a whopping 87.3% of Netflix’s TV catalogue is exclusively available on their platform.
Despite this, the subscribers are not necessarily celebrating, and instead are using the record as an opportunity to express their disappointment with the ongoing changes.
According to one Redditor, Netflix used to offer thrilling shows such as Narcos, Marco Polo, and the Queen’s Gambit. However, despite their record profits and constant stream of new releases, the commenter no longer finds themselves feeling excited about anything the streaming service produces.
“The post continued, expressing disappointment in the lack of quality content produced this year. The writer mentioned that they could not recall a single good movie or TV show, stating that everything seemed to be catering to the lowest common denominator. They specifically mentioned the letdowns of Rebel Moon and other projects.”
A second person agreed with the statement, “Numbers mean nothing when 19/20 things are garbage you’ll never watch,”with a third person adding, “Or if they’re canceled before they end, they’re not worth watching even if they’re good.”
Despite the successful renewal of popular series like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Black Mirror, many original shows on the platform have not been as fortunate.
The success of Netflix’s original content is not only evaluated based on its performance in the first four days after release, but also on the number of viewers within the first 28 days. Essentially, if a movie or show fails to meet its intended goal, it is unlikely to receive a sequel, regardless of fan feedback.
Despite high expectations, the opening weekend of teen drama series Dead Boy Detectives proved to be a disappointment as it failed to attract a significant number of viewers, even falling below the recently canceled The Brothers Sun.
Although there may not be any new originals currently available on the streaming platform, there are still more to come. These include titles such as Richard Linklater’s Hit Man and Jennifer Lopez’s Atlas, both of which will be released later in the year.
Discover a plethora of incredible films, television series, and true crime documentaries to binge-watch on streaming services this month. And if that’s not sufficient, stay informed on what exciting new K-dramas are coming out this year.
