Netflix has recently made the decision to cancel various zombie movies and TV shows by Zack Snyder, causing disappointment among his devoted fans.
The director, Snyder, and Netflix have maintained a mutually beneficial partnership since the release of his action horror film Army of the Dead on the platform in 2021.
Since then, Snyder has created two additional films for the streaming service: Rebel Moon Part 1 and Rebel Moon Part 2, as well as R-rated director’s cuts for both installments. Despite this, he still holds out hope of returning to his vision of the undead in the near future.
Regrettably, the possibility of additional Army of the Dead sequels or TV shows came to an end when Snyder and his wife and producing partner, Deborah, revealed to The Wrap that Netflix had silently put a halt to all future projects indefinitely.
“Snyder expressed his strong ambition for his plan to create an entire universe centered around the 2021 movie, but unfortunately, Netflix cancelled its future before it could come to fruition.”
Snyder returned to the world of zombies for the first time since 2004’s Dawn of the Dead with Army of the Dead.
In December 2023, the director discussed his plans for expanding the universe in an interview with GameRadar+. These plans included a potential animated series to accompany the existing entries.
“Snyder mentioned that they had been working on their Army animated series and are currently striving to revive it. He added that the series was highly impressive.”
After that, he proceeded to hint at the potential sequel Army of the Dead 2, sharing, “My concept for Army 2 is Planet of the Dead, which takes the scale to a whole new level. I’m incredibly thrilled about it.”Currently, I am working on both of these projects simultaneously, but I am ecstatic to see the enthusiasm for more content in the Army universe as I am deeply passionate about it.
Despite making these plans just last year, the Snyders will not be coming back to this realm anytime soon, to the disappointment of their supporters.
One viewer shared on X/Twitter that they found Army of the Dead to be highly entertaining and expressed their desire for a sequel, hoping that the rumor about it not being true was false.
Despite the lack of an official statement from Netflix, speculation has arisen that the shelving of Snyder’s zombie universe may be due to the R-rated versions of Rebel Moon not performing well on the platform.
According to What’s on Netflix, the R-rated versions of both movies received less than 3.6 million views each, significantly lower than the PG-13 versions which garnered 23.9 million and 21.4 million views respectively.
Despite having ambitious intentions to create an expansive universe for his sci-fi epics, Snyder’s plan has ultimately met the same fate as his zombie world – it is now deceased and laid to rest.
