Netflix Releases Live-Action Movie Adaptation of Golden Kamuy

The live-action film adaptation of Golden Kamuy was released in Japan in January 2024. It has recently started streaming on Netflix, but without much publicity or attention.

Despite being a charming watch, Golden Kamuy has not gained the same level of popularity as other anime shows like Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen since its debut on Crunchyroll in 2018. The historical adventure follows Japanese veteran Saichi Sugimoto as he helps young Ainu girl Asirpa seek revenge for her father’s death, but it has not received as much attention as other titles.

Despite this, a live-action adaptation was released in Japan this year and has already become the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2024 in the country. It surpassed popular films like Spy x Family Code: White and Demon Slayer: To The Hashira Training. The film gained enough attention for Netflix to take notice, resulting in its recent release in the US and UK, which went relatively unnoticed.

Currently, Golden Kamuy can be streamed on Netflix. The movie has a similar storyline to the anime, which is adapted from Satoru Noda’s manga, and is directed by Shigeaki Kubo, who also helmed the popular High&Low series of Japanese action films.

Cast of the Golden Kamuy Movie

In the Golden Kamuy movie, Saichi Sugimoto is played by Kento Yamazaki, while Anna Yamada stars as Asirpa. Similar to The Last of Us and The Mandalorian, the movie features a father figure who takes on the task of guiding a young person towards redemption, but with fewer zombies and blasters.

Yûma Yamoto portrays Yoshitake Shiraishi, who is eventually recruited by Saichi to join their group as an escape artist. Also part of the team is Ryohei Otani as Genjirō Tanigaki. Together, they navigate through numerous rival groups in search of Ainu treasure amidst the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War.

Indulging in some popcorn escapism is unlikely to lead you astray. It also serves as a great diversion as we eagerly anticipate updates on Tower of God Season 2, Solo Leveling Season 2, and other highly anticipated anime releases this year.
