Despite maintaining a stronghold at the top of Netflix’s TV chart since its launch, Monsters has slipped to number two, overtaken by a new romantic comedy series.
For weeks, true crime and murder stories have been the main drivers of viewership on Netflix, highlighted by the premieres of Monsters Season 2 and The Perfect Couple.
However, despite some backlash against Ryan Murphy’s latest endeavor with the streaming giant, a new show has ascended to the number one spot.
Nobody Wants This, a 10-episode series featuring Kirsten Bell and Adam Brody, has claimed the throne on the platform, boasting an impressive 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Loosely inspired by events from Erin Foster‘s real life, Nobody Wants This follows Joanne (Bell), a sex and dating podcaster, who begins to fall for Noah (Brody), a rabbi.
The show embodies the classic romantic comedy “will they/won’t they”dynamic, as Joanne and Noah navigate the challenges posed by their contrasting lifestyles.
Foster experienced a similar scenario when she met Simon Tikhman at a gym in Los Angeles back in 2018. Though Tikhman was not a rabbi, he is Jewish and expressed, “Whoever I marry, she has to be Jewish.”
Although not religious herself, the writer converted to Judaism before marrying Tikhman in 2019. The couple continues to reside in California with their 4-month-old daughter, Noa.
The genuine and relatable elements that Foster infused into Nobody Wants This are key reasons for the show’s popular reception. One fan tweeted, “I can finally say that NOBODY WANTS THIS is perfect. A romcom that is actually romance AND comedy.”
Another viewer commented, “I don’t know how it took this long for someone to put Adam Brody and Kristen Bell in a TV show together, but whoever finally decided to do it: THANK YOU! This show was everything I wanted and more! I need a second season, STAT!”
And a third fan wrote, “Nobody Wants This is SOOOOOO good! I’ve been giggling and kicking my feet the entire time.”
