Netflix to Release Comprehensive Menendez Brothers Documentary Correcting Ryan Murphy’s Major Oversight

After the release of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix on September 19, the streaming service is set to debut a documentary addressing the most significant criticism directed at the drama series.

This true crime series has sparked considerable debate among viewers shortly after its launch. The Ryan Murphy interpretation of the Menendez brothers’ narrative is characterized by its opulence, emotional breakdowns, and a somewhat extravagant style, leading to a variety of criticisms.

A major point of contention among fans is the controversial incestuous subplot included between the two brothers. Additionally, Erik Menendez, who is currently imprisoned, condemned the show, labeling it as “inaccurate” and filled with “blatant lies.”

In an unexpected twist, Netflix has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming documentary titled The Menendez Brothers. This new film will explore the same case from a different perspective, featuring insights from Erik and Lyle themselves. It seems that Netflix is determined to address the “fanfiction” accusations head-on.

Scheduled for release on October 7, the documentary includes interviews with the Menendez brothers 30 years after their conviction for the murder of their parents. It also features commentary from various figures involved in the case, including the original prosecutor, Pam Bozanich.

The audience response to Monsters has been mixed, with some viewers expressing gratitude for a new perspective on the case, while others are critiquing it as mere “damage control.”

One user on X commented, “‘Lyle is the only person who has ever protected me.’ And Ryan Murphy had the audacity to portray their relationship like THAT.”

Another user argued, “Netflix is now trying to do damage control after releasing Monsters, which depicted two men who experienced traumatic abuse as children and portrayed them as incestuous, money-hungry individuals solely for dramatization and profit. Now they want to release an actual documentary. What a joke.”

Another user expressed their relief about the documentary being released shortly after Monsters, stating, “This coming out right after Monsters makes me happy because Ryan Murphy did these brothers so damn dirty. They deserve to have their story told THE RIGHT F**KING WAY!!”

One more user commented, “This is actually so vile. Having Lyle and Erik collaborate with you to tell their stories again after 30 years, and still releasing your gross incest fanfic about them, while then putting out their side of the story afterward to cover your own back is just unacceptable. Please kick rocks.”

The Menendez Brothers documentary will be available on the streaming platform starting October 7, 2024.
