Netflix and Kim Kardashian have once again collaborated to adapt a coming-of-age novel that resonates deeply with the celebrity.
Netflix has once again hopped on the Kardashian bandwagon as they have acquired the rights to produce a TV series called Calabasas. The show will be a collaboration between Kim Kardashian, her American Horror Story colleague Emma Roberts, and renowned writer and producer I. Marlene King, with Alexandra Milchan also on board as a writer and showrunner.
The inspiration for Calabasas comes from Via Bleidner’s novel, If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now. Published in 2021, the book is a firsthand account of life in the Los Angeles suburb that served as the childhood home of the Kardashians and was prominently featured on their reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Despite its title, the book does not revolve around the Kardashians. Rather, it is told from the perspective of Bleidner, who shares amusing and heartwarming anecdotes from her youth growing up in one of the wealthiest areas of Los Angeles.
The book’s official synopsis describes Via Bleidner as she transfers from the private Catholic school she’s attended since second grade to Calabasas High. The sudden change is a culture shock for Via, leaving her feeling lonely and out of place. In order to cope, she adopts a journalistic approach, observing her classmates and taking notes on their lives and conversations, much like Cameron Crowe in his work.
Surviving high school in Calabasas is truly a unique experience. From having Kim Kardashian promote the students’ beloved secret lunch spot, to the theater program casting a celebrity dog to play Elle Woods’ Chihuahua in their rendition of Legally Blonde, and even Kanye attempting to turn the school into the first-ever YEEZY institution, there is never a dull moment.
In a way, this solidifies Calabasas as one of Kardashian’s most intimate endeavors thus far. The actress had a prominent part in American Horror Story: Delicate, portraying the merciless publicist Siobhan Corbyn. Additionally, she has another venture in progress with Netflix, a film called Fifth Wheel, in which she is slated to be the lead.
Additionally, she is currently working on an untitled thriller with Amazon and a legal drama with Hulu, both in collaboration with Ryan Murphy, co-creator of AHS.
