Netflix’s new Mark Wahlberg & Halle Berry movie gets dreadful Rotten Tomatoes score

If you haven’t heard of The Union, it’s understandable. The new movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry was just released on Netflix, but Rotten Tomatoes is already giving it a negative review.

When two of Hollywood’s most prominent talents collaborate on the world’s largest streaming platform, what can you expect? According to Rotten Tomatoes, a mediocre action movie is the result.

The film, The Union, features Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg as its stars and centers around the story of construction worker Mike, who is enlisted by his childhood love Roxanne for a US intelligence mission.

Despite its seemingly foolproof plot, the new movie has only received a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes upon its debut.

According to Roger Moore of Movie Nation, the film reviewed at Netflixable can be described as incredibly generic, painfully predictable, and filled with cliched and senseless dialogue that mirrors the shallow characters and situations portrayed.

Joseph Robinson from Fish Jelly Films also shares the sentiment that despite the presence of two Oscar winners and Wahlberg, this green screen dream falls short of being a unique espionage rom-com. The expensive soundtrack and awkward dialogue give off the impression that the entire film was hastily written, filmed, and edited within a mere two-week period.

Andrew Parker of The Gate remarked, “While everything here is satisfactory, it is hardly cause for celebration. It’s like praising a plain rice cake for fulfilling its purpose as a rice cake or room temperature water for being lukewarm. What is there to be excited about?”

Without a doubt, the movie is not considered to be Netflix’s most successful, as it is following the same path as the originals Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Atlas.

Despite some reservations, many believe that Wahlberg and Berry are the only saving grace preventing The Union from becoming a complete disaster.

According to Dhaval Roy of The Times of India, while fans of Wahlberg and Berry may appreciate their performances, The Union may not be a particularly memorable or thought-provoking film. It is more suited as a one-time watch for fans of action-packed spy thrillers rather than a movie that will keep you fully engaged.

According to Pete Hammond at Deadline Hollywood Daily, the union of Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry in their first collaboration of the genre was fortuitous, resulting in a film that sets itself apart and provides pure entertainment.

Fortunately, this will not be the final appearance of either of them on the silver screen in the current year. Berry has been cast in the survival horror film Never Let Go, while Wahlberg will be taking to the skies in Flight Risk.

If The Union hasn’t piqued your interest, there are plenty of other new movies streaming this month and the best movies of the year so far for you to explore.
