On Friday, August 23, 2024, the third and last casting announcement for the second season of One Piece Live Action was made, fulfilling the promise of a string of news from the show’s creator, Eiichiro Oda. This final reveal confirmed the long-standing speculation that Charithra Chandran will be portraying Miss Wednesday, also known as Nefertari Vivi.
The announcement of these castings for season 2 of One Piece Live Action was made via the Netflix series’ official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday the 22 and Wednesday the 21. Nefertari Cobra, Vivi’s father, was cast as Sendhil Ramamurthy on Thursday, while on Wednesday, Dr. Kureha, played by Katey Sagal of Sons of Anarchy fame, and Dr. Hiriluk, played by Mark Harelik, were also announced.
One Piece Live Action Season 2’s Official Casting Confirms Long-Standing Rumor for Nefertari Vivi/Miss Wednesday
Before being cast as Miss Wednesday/Nefertari Vivi in season 2 of One Piece Live Action, Charithra Chandran was already familiar to viewers through her notable performances in other major roles. She portrayed Edwina in Netflix’s Bridgerton period drama and Sabina Pleasance in the second series of Amazon’s Alex Rider. In 2024, she also made her West End debut as Eileen in Rosie Day’s Instructions for a Teenage Armageddon.
Some of Chandran’s other notable roles include voicing Annisoukaline “Anni” Kalfus in the “I Am Your Mother” episode of Star Wars: Visions, portraying Amelia Brown in How to Date Billy Walsh, and serving as both executive producer and actress for the upcoming Song of the Sun God where she plays the role of Leela.
The official Netflix X account released a brief video of Chandran discussing her casting and expressing her enthusiasm. She acknowledges the importance of the Vivi character to fans and pledges to give her best effort to do justice to the role and make fans proud.
With this being the last casting announcement in the recent string of reports, there are only a few major characters whose information fans are still missing. These include Tony Tony Chopper and Miss All Sunday/Nico Robin. It is understandable that these two characters would be saved for the final casting announcements, as they are the most significant ones who will appear in the upcoming second season.
Some fans are especially interested in how Chopper’s portrayal and portrayal will be handled in the live-action adaptation, given the character’s complexity. There is speculation that instead of utilizing practical effects, the actor for Chopper will solely provide the voice while CGI is used to bring the character to life on screen.
The second season of One Piece Live Action will continue to adapt Oda’s original manga. The manga first began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 1997 and is still ongoing, currently progressing through its final saga.
