Despite not yet being officially released, Netflix’s original series “The 8 Show”has already generated buzz and sparked discussions due to a number of controversies surrounding the cast and director.
The press conference for the Netflix original series “The Eight Show” (directed by Han Jae-rim) was held on May 10th at 11 a.m. at Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul. In attendance were actors and actresses Ryu Jun-yeol, Chun Woo-hee, Park Jung-min, Lee Yeol-eum, Park Hae-joon, Lee Ju-young, Moon Jung-hee, Bae Seong-woo, and director Han Jae-rim.
Bae Sung-woo’s participation in this event marks his first public appearance since his arrest for drunk driving in November 2020. During the press conference, he expressed remorse, stating, “I would like to apologize to everyone, especially those who showed me support and encouragement. I am aware of the disappointment I have caused.”He also acknowledged the potential inconvenience his personal issues may have caused for those who have worked with him, stating, “I was cautious and concerned about the impact on those who collaborated with me.”
After being caught drunk driving, Bae Seong-woo was forced to leave his role in the SBS drama “Delayed Justice.”As a result, the drama was canceled and the lead role was taken over by Jung Woo-sung, leading to significant repercussions for the production. Despite this, Bae did not take much time to reflect on his actions and instead resumed his work. In 2021, he appeared in the film “Untold Secret”and also joined the cast of “The 8 Show.”
Director Han Jae-rim justified his decision to cast Bae Seong-woo by stating, “As a director, I strongly believe Bae Seong-woo is the perfect fit for this role. I carefully considered other options, but my ‘hyung’ expressed genuine sincerity and shared the struggles he faced.”This raised doubts among some, as the director referred to the actor as “hyung,”implying a close bond between them.
Moreover, at this event, Ryu Jun-yeol addressed the issue surrounding his alleged “transit love”relationship. In March, he faced speculation about a romantic involvement with actress Han So-hee. This was followed by a “greenwashing controversy”as he was a representative for the environmental protection organization Greenpeace, yet was seen playing golf, which has a detrimental effect on the environment.
During the press conference, Ryu Jun-yeol stated that despite his initial reluctance, he believed it was more prudent to remain quiet and accept the resulting criticism rather than addressing each contentious social media post individually.
Despite the initial explanation, the matter regarding the alleged romance between 50-year-old director Han Jae-rim and 29-year-old actress Lee Yeol-eum continued to be raised. It was previously stated that the two were dating, but they chose to keep their relationship private for personal reasons.
Upon reading the article, Director Han Jae-rim expressed his curiosity about the creation of such a story, clarifying that although they are close, they are not in a romantic relationship.
