The highly anticipated Ghost in the Shell is making a comeback, as Science SARU, the studio known for Devilman Crybaby, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and the upcoming Dandadan, is producing a new anime series based on the manga.
On May 25, Science SARU announced that the highly anticipated anime show, The Ghost in the Shell, will be released in 2026. Instead of a movie, this adaptation will feature scenes from the manga and a new poster of Major Motoko Kusanagi was also revealed in the teaser.
Despite limited information about the release window and other details, the idea of a production company like Science SARU tackling a visually daring project like Ghost in the Shell is already thrilling.
Throughout its existence, the studio has consistently created top-notch anime for viewers seeking unique and thought-provoking narratives. A prime example of this is Devilman Crybaby, a superhero anime that delves into the depths of darkness with its gritty and intense tone. Another standout is Ping Pong The Animation, a remarkably well-crafted sports anime.
The production house was responsible for the highly anticipated Dandadan adaptation, as well as providing animation for The Colors Within, an upcoming film from Naoko Yamada. Additionally, in 2022, they were behind the creation of the awesome rock opera Inu-Oh on the big screen, all produced by Science SARU.
Despite the absence of any personnel, there is a possibility that Masaaki Yuasa, who co-founded Science SARU with Eunyoung Choi, will oversee The Ghost in the Shell. This is currently just speculation, and I may be wishfully thinking.
In 1989, Masamune Shirow published Ghost in the Shell, a groundbreaking cyberpunk story set in an alternate future Japan. It explores a world where humans have blurred the lines between their natural selves and technology through the use of cybernetic implants. The story follows Makoto, a synthetic detective, as she investigates a mysterious hacker whose actions have far-reaching implications for humanity’s existence.
Despite the release of various sequels and shows since its debut in 1995, the anime film directed by Mamoru Oshii continues to be a standard for stunning visuals and intense action in the genre. Even with the most recent installment on Netflix in 2020, Mamoru’s interpretation remains unmatched.
As additional details about the show become available, we will continue to provide updates.
