New Anime Titles Leaked in Massive Netflix Breach

The leaked online content, including Dandadan, the Ranma 1/2 remake, Terminator Zero, the upcoming Mononoke movie, and possibly others, suggests a significant breach of Netflix’s security.

On August 6, 2024, various media content including episodes of Terminator Zero, Dandadan, and Mappa’s remake of Ranma 1/2, as well as the highly anticipated film Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain, were released online. Clips are being shared on social media and the full versions are also available through piracy sites.

The leaked copies, which contain hardcoded timestamps, are of low quality, indicating that they have originated from the production pipeline. Although the exact source has not been verified, it is believed that the culprit is a leaker at Netflix Japan. The presence of Japanese dialogue without subtitles or dubs in some affected releases further supports this belief.

Currently, Dandadan is being distributed by the service in Japan and internationally by Crunchyroll. Both Ranma 1/2 and Terminator will soon be available on Netflix worldwide. However, as of now, Mononoke the Movie does not have a confirmed international distributor, as it has only premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal on July 20, 2024.

Despite the leaks, neither Netflix nor any of the other companies involved in these productions have acknowledged or addressed the issue. The release date for Dandadan is still set for October, with a limited theatrical run beginning on September 13, and Ranma 1/2 is also expected to debut on Netflix during this period, starting on October 6.

While a release date for Mononoke has not been announced, it is expected to premiere later this year based on its festival debut. Phantom in the Rain, the first installment in a planned trilogy, is a remake of the popular and stylish anime series from 2007.

The popular manga by Yukinobu Tatsu, Dandadan, has been turned into an adaptation that follows the story of two high school students. One is a skeptic of ghosts and the other denies the existence of UFOs. As they challenge each other’s beliefs to absurd extremes, the first two episodes were screened at Anime Expo 2024 and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

The series Ranma 1/2 is currently being remade, staying faithful to the classic ’80s show that follows the story of a young martial artist who undergoes a gender transformation upon being exposed to specific temperatures.

We have contacted Netflix for a statement and will provide an update upon receiving a response.
