New Character in The Diplomat Season 2 Trailer Has Strong Ties to The West Wing

Netflix’s political drama The Diplomat will be returning in October for its second season, with the addition of The West Wing’s Allison Janney to the cast.

Janney was unexpectedly announced as part of the cast in the first teaser for The Diplomat Season 2. As stated by Netflix, she will be portraying the Vice President, Grace Hill, who had not been seen before.

Interestingly, Janney is not listed as a new cast member but instead as a guest star. It has been confirmed that she will make multiple appearances throughout the season, although it is currently unknown how many episodes she will appear in.

Of course, Janney is most recognized for her role as C.J. Cregg throughout all seven seasons of The West Wing. In the show, she portrays the no-nonsense Press Secretary of the Bartlet administration, who eventually rises to the position of Chief of Staff after Leo McGarry’s departure.

Janney’s casting brings her back together with Debora Cahn, the creator and executive producer of The Diplomat, who previously worked with her for the last four seasons of The West Wing.

Keri Russell portrays Kate Wyler in The Diplomat, a drama that follows her journey as a made-up US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. The show delves into the challenges of her demanding position and the difficulties she faces in her marriage to her ex-ambassador husband, Hal Wyler, portrayed by Rufus Sewell.

Season 1 concluded with a startling explosion that nearly claimed Hal’s life, however, according to Netflix’s press release, he will pull through as the two team up to uncover the identity of a government insider who targeted Kate for assassination.

The second season of The Diplomat will make its debut on Netflix on October 31, 2024.
