A new installment of the Ghost in the Shell anime has been given the go-ahead for production, as announced by the anime’s official staff on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The anime, being produced by Science SARU, is set to debut in 2026. Excitingly, the team behind the anime has revealed a teaser visual and promotional video on their website and X (formerly known as Twitter) account.
The recently released Ghost in the Shell anime is based on the well-known Japanese cyberpunk manga series of the same name, created by Masamune Shirow. It was first published in Japan from 1989 to 1990 in Kodansha’s YOUNG MAGAZINE.
The manga Ghost in the Shell has been adapted into the latest anime series, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 The Last Human. This series includes a compilation film for its second season. The manga has also served as inspiration for numerous anime and other forms of media.
The New Ghost in the Shell Anime to Premiere in 2026 Under Science SARU’s Productions
A new music event, titled DEEP DIVE in Sync with GHOST IN THE SHELL, was held on Saturday, May 25, 2024, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original manga series’ serialization. At the event, the staff revealed a teaser trailer confirming that a new Ghost in the Shell anime is currently in production.
As per the announcement, Science SARU will oversee the production of the series. The renowned studio has earned a strong reputation in the world of anime for their involvement in various projects such as Inu-Oh, The Tatami Time Machine Blues, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, and The Colors Within.
The studio has announced that they are currently developing an anime adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan manga. During the event, it was revealed that the highly anticipated Ghost in the Shell anime will be released in 2026. However, no further information regarding the cast, staff, or specific release date has been disclosed at this time.
Despite being mentioned earlier, the staff has released a teaser PV and a visual. The promotional video features several memorable moments from the original manga, highlighting the significant characters and plot points.
Similarly, the illustration in question is sourced from Masamune Shirow’s original manga series and showcases the main characters, Motoko Kusanagi and Fuchikoma. Furthermore, it also discloses that the production committee for the anime includes Kodansha, Science SARU, Production I.G, and Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Along with the announcement of the new Ghost in the Shell anime, the event also disclosed plans for an art exhibition featuring the works of Masamune Shirow. Tentatively titled The World of Shirow Masamune, the exhibition is scheduled to take place in Tokyo’s Setagaya Literary Museum in 2025. The upcoming Ghost in the Shell anime will adhere to the storyline of Masamune Shirow’s cyberpunk manga series. It takes place in Japan during the mid-21st century, where the distinction between humans and machines has become less clear as humans have become increasingly dependent on machines.
The leader of Public Security Section 9, Major Motoko Kusanagi, has been assigned the responsibility of locating and apprehending dangerous cyber criminals, such as the notorious Ghost Hackers, who have the ability to manipulate human/machine interactions in order to control their victims.
