A new Ghostbusters movie has been given the go-ahead, but it does not serve as a direct sequel to the previous live-action films.
Despite the franchise launching with the immensely popular 1984 movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Sigourney Weaver, Ghostbusters has had a sporadic presence over the years.
There have been three installments in the Ghostbusters franchise: the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters 2, the 2016 reboot, and the 2021 sequel Ghostbusters Afterlife. Most recently, a spin-off titled Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was released earlier this year.
The franchise is making a comeback as a new animated series on Netflix has been given the go-ahead.
Despite being the first animated version of the franchise, The Real Ghostbusters premiered in 1986 and aired 140 episodes. It was later followed by Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997, which had a run of 40 episodes.
According to Variety, Elliott Kalan has been hired as the writer and executive producer for the new show. With his experience as head writer for The Daily Show with John Stewart and the Netflix reboot of Mystery Science Theater 3000, audiences can anticipate plenty of laughs.
According to Variety, the show will be created using 3D animation and will maintain a similar tone to that of the recent movies.
The writing and directing team, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, responsible for those movies will also hold the role of executive producers on the cartoon.
Despite a budget of $100 million, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, their most recent film, still managed to bring in a respectable $200 million in box office sales.
As of right now, there is no information available about when the new animated series will be released. However, you can still browse through the latest TV shows available for streaming this month, as well as the top new movies coming to theaters.
