In 2024, the world of horror movies is thriving, from classics like Longlegs and MaXXXine to newer releases like Immaculate and In A Violent Nature. And just when we thought we had seen it all, a highly anticipated film with a stellar endorsement is on the way, promising even more thrilling and gory goodness for fans to enjoy.
Stephen King, a renowned horror author, recently expressed his admiration for the new film Strange Darling on social media, calling it a masterpiece. For those who may doubt his opinion, the movie has also received a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“According to King’s tweet on X/Twitter, I received an early screening of Strange Darling and it is truly fantastic. He also shared the trailer, which he described as a clever masterpiece. I don’t want to give anything away, but after watching the film, you’ll understand why the trailer is so intriguing.”
With a release date set for August 23 in the US, Strange Darling delves into the aftermath of a “twisted”one-night stand that escalates into a brutal killing spree by a serial killer.
Despite the lack of any other released scenes, critics are already echoing King’s high praise for the film based solely on the trailer mentioned above.
At InSession film, M.N. Miller stated that “Strange Darling”is the top thriller of the year and a chilling respite from the scorching summer heat.
Despite its resemblance to a 70s exploitation film, Mollner’s movie is set in the present and cleverly incorporates commentary on power dynamics, the deception of appearances, and the importance of not taking things at face value. Olga Artemyeva from ScreenAnarchy shared this sentiment in their review of “Strange Darling,”agreeing that it is a thrilling joy ride that will leave a lasting impression.
At Movie Files, Elliott Collins stated, “Strange Darling is the epitome of a mind-boggling film, in the most positive sense. Its non-linear storyline and twisted cat and mouse game will leave you stunned with its constant twists and turns. Willa Fitzgerald delivers an outstanding performance.”
Despite the widespread agreement that Stranger Darling will be one of the top movies of the year, there is a catch. Horror fans in the UK and internationally will have to wait an additional month compared to viewers in the US to experience all the excitement and scares.
The release date for the UK is currently set for September 24th. Additionally, Stephen King is currently working on his own horror project, with the IT prequel Welcome to Derry expected to premiere on screens sometime next year.
