Rachel Zegler is once again dealing with backlash from the toxic fandom, as her upcoming A24 horror film, set to release in four months, has already been targeted by “review bombing.”
Despite being a newcomer, Zegler faced a wave of backlash last year after an interview from 2022, in which she expressed her views on the original Snow White, gained widespread attention.
Following the announcement of her role as the lead in the highly-anticipated live-action remake of the beloved Disney classic, the star has faced a barrage of negative comments from trolls. However, her co-stars and Zegler herself have been quick to step in and shut down the hateful remarks.
Despite not being as widespread as the backlash in 2023, the upcoming A24 film, Y2K, has been subjected to what appears to be review bombing.
The latest film, helmed by former SNL cast member Kyle Mooney, offers a fresh perspective on the Y2K bug hysteria during the turn of the century.
On the eve of New Year’s in 1999, the comedy horror film depicts the story of two teenagers who attend a party that quickly escalates into chaos as the world prepares for a potential technological disaster.
Despite its current mixed reviews and a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score of 63%, netizens have noticed a concerning pattern surrounding the movie. Even though it has not been officially released yet, viewers have been giving it negative reviews.
One person on Reddit commented, “People are review bombing a film on IMDb that isn’t even scheduled to be released for another four months.”
“In essence, the situation is that Kyle Mooney’s new film, Y2K, is a sci-fi horror comedy set to be released on December 6. The trailer for the film was also released today and appears to be quite promising.”
“Despite Rachel Zegler’s presence in the film, it is still being subjected to review bombing similar to that of The Acolyte.”
Someone else commented on the post, expressing disbelief by saying, “Wow, I initially thought you were overreacting or making things up, but when I checked online, I saw there are actually 96 one star reviews for a movie that hasn’t even been released yet. What the heck?”
A third person commented, “It doesn’t make sense to me that reviews are allowed before a movie has even been released. They should only be permitted in the first week after it comes out.”
Based on recent observations, it appears that Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb have implemented measures to prevent unjustified negative ratings from lowering a film’s score. As a result, their Y2K pages no longer display any one-star reviews.
“One person commented, “I noticed on the Rotten Tomatoes link that it only shows reviews from critics and its average score.”Their companion responded, “I believe that’s because Rotten Tomatoes plans to filter out any review bombing of films before their release, starting with Captain Marvel.”
Despite this, the trolls continue to troll as A24’s trailer release on Facebook has received unwarranted criticism.
“Initially, I was enthusiastic about this movie. However, upon learning that Rachel Zegler was cast in it, one person wrote, “I was disappointed,”and another commented, “Rachel Zegler ruined it.”A third individual simply stated, “I’ll pass,”upon hearing that Zegler was part of the cast.”
There have been an equal number of comments responding to the hate, including one from a person who remarked, “It’s unbelievable that a 23 year old is causing so much harm to these men in the comment section. You all seem so fragile.”
Mark your calendars for December 6, when Y2K will hit the big screen. In the meantime, take a look at the upcoming horror movies to anticipate in 2024, as well as the top films of the current year.
