According to reports, the recently released Jackbox Megapicker launcher is causing Steam Decks to become unusable. However, a new hotfix has been released to ensure that the party can continue without any issues.
The Megapicker game launcher, created by Jackbox Games, was intended to collect all of your preferred party games into one convenient platform. However, it has recently been reported that the new launcher is causing the Steam Deck to malfunction instead.
On the day the new launcher was released by Jackbox, a Reddit user named thejudge555 posted about their experience with it on the r/SteamDeck community. They shared that the launcher had temporarily caused their Valve handheld to stop functioning.
Upon returning to the game selection menu of the launcher, an error message suddenly appeared, causing all UI-related buttons to become unresponsive. Despite multiple attempts to restart the Steam Deck, thejude555 reported that it continued to get stuck on the start-up logo.
Others also shared the same sentiment. Numerous Steam Deck owners expressed their frustration in the comments of the original post, advising against installing the Jackbox Megapicker altogether.
According to StormcastPrime2, a fellow user of r/Steam Deck, their handheld also experienced the same issue.
Despite successfully reinstalling SteamOS through a USB stick, the system bricked again upon attempting to play Megapicker for a second time.
Valve comes to the rescue with a hotfix
Despite the situation, Jackbox Games responded promptly to the Reddit thread. The community manager for the company stated that they were actively investigating the reported issue.
The developer used the game’s forums to warn players not to download the launcher at this time.
Meanwhile, Pierre-Loud Griffais, a Valve coder and enthusiast of the Steam Deck, went on X/Twitter to clarify that a hotfix has been released for the game launcher.
A hotfix has been issued to select Proton by default for the Jackbox Megapicker until the issues with corrupting the Steam installation are addressed. To avoid issues, don’t override the compatibility selection to the Linux Runtime.

This latest hotfix ensures that the Jackbox Games Megapicker uses the default Proton layer, even though it is already native on Linux.
Despite the apparent fault lying with the native Linux version, the hotfix will still open the functioning Windows version of Megapicker.
With any luck, it won’t be too much longer until you can confidently access all of your Jackbox Games from one centralized location on Steam Deck.
