New movie tops Netflix chart despite shocking Rotten Tomatoes score

Despite receiving a shocking Rotten Tomatoes score, a new movie starring Jessica Alba has quickly risen to the top spot on Netflix’s Top 10 chart.

In the beginning of this month, Hit Man achieved the highest spot on the Netflix chart, with a score to equal it. Both critics and audiences gave it high ratings of 96% and 91% respectively.

However, Trigger Warning, a recently released film, has surpassed it with a less-than-favorable Rotten Tomatoes rating of only 25% on the Tomatometer and 16% from viewers.

Mouly Surya directs Trigger Warning, a thrilling action film featuring Jessica Alba as a Special Forces operative on a mission to eliminate a dangerous gang.

Undoubtedly, it has become a hit based on its statistics, quickly climbing to the top spot upon its release on the streaming platform on June 21.

The feedback for the film has not been positive. According to Paste Magazine, “Trigger Warning”, a movie about a veteran seeking revenge, is poorly executed and slow-paced. The excessive use of camp makes it feel like a Lifetime Original action movie.

At some point, IndieWire stated that the decision was made for Trigger Warning to not necessarily be a good show, but rather something that people might choose to watch on a Friday night when they are too tired to find something better.

The audience reviews were mostly negative, with one viewer expressing surprise that Alba had chosen this movie as her comeback. They criticized the dialogue, acting, action scenes, and pace, and deemed the film a waste of its budget.

“As one viewer pointed out, this film’s weak foundation was fully reflected in its low ratings. It was poorly written and acted, and overall, it was hilariously terrible. The plot was so lackluster that it couldn’t even cover up its many inconsistencies.”

One person also mentioned, “I found myself feeling bored while watching the movie. I mainly watched because I wanted to see Jessica Alba, but I didn’t feel fully engaged in the story. The writing in the first half was decent, but the way the story was presented was lacking. The plot was extremely predictable and there were some inconsistencies that didn’t make sense.”

Despite mixed reviews, Trigger Warning received praise from The Guardian, which described it as “a derivative yet watchable attempt to kick off a new franchise.”

At the same time, another viewer awarded it three stars and commented, “It’s still an enjoyable watch if you’re willing to switch off your brain for an hour and a half and not take it too seriously.”

Now streaming on Netflix, Trigger Warning can be watched for yourself.
