New Netflix Documentary Surpasses Squid Game Season 2 in Popularity

Squid Game Season 2 has made a significant splash on Netflix, continuing the legacy of its predecessor. However, it has recently been pushed down from the top spot on the platform’s viewing charts by a provocative new documentary.

The inaugural season of Squid Game holds the record as Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. This popularity has carried over into Season 2, which premiered on December 26, achieving an impressive 126 million views within the first 11 days. This remarkable milestone positions it as Netflix’s second-most-watched non-English season, second only to the original season.

The Rise of Jerry Springer’s Documentary

In an unexpected turn, the new documentary titled “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action” has surged to the number one position on Netflix, surpassing Squid Game. Launched on January 7, 2025, this two-part series quickly captured the audience’s attention.

Directed by Luke Sewell, renowned for his work on Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King, the documentary offers a unique lens on the tumultuous history of The Jerry Springer Show. The official synopsis reveals, “the jaw-dropping series tells the story of the show as it’s never been told before, featuring extraordinary firsthand testimony and revelations from insider sources.”

One particularly infamous highlight of the documentary recounts the “grotesque”episode of The Jerry Springer Show that became infamous for its shocking content, including a plotline where a man abandoned his family to marry a Shetland pony.

While Fights, Camera, Action dives into sensationalist territory typical of true crime documentaries, critics argue that it contributes little new information to the saga of its subject matter.

Despite the current competition, the success of Squid Game Season 2 is a positive sign for Netflix as they look forward to the anticipated release of Season 3 later this year.
