New Netflix series based on chilling true story gets 100% Rotten Tomatoes score

A new TV series on Netflix has received a flawless score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to be the most chilling show to watch in 2024.

Despite Unlocked: A Jail Experiment still holding the number one spot on Netflix’s top 10 chart, a new limited series was released on the platform right before the weekend and has gradually risen to third place (and is also the top-ranked show in other countries).

Donny, an aspiring and struggling comedian, played by Richard Gadd, is the main character in Baby Reindeer. He spends most of his time behind a bar in London, which he also wrote and directed. One day, a Scottish woman (Jessica Gunning) enters the pub alone, visibly upset and short on money. Donny kindly offers her a free cup of tea, not realizing that this small gesture will lead to the most difficult year of his life.

Gadd’s depiction of his stalker and sexual assault is drawn from his own personal experience. Throughout seven episodes, he delves into the traumatic events of his past, often reliving them with intense and vivid recollections. The result is a raw and impactful TV series that can be both humorous and emotionally draining, following the lead of acclaimed shows like Fleabag and I May Destroy You, and arguably surpassing them in its unflinching portrayal of brutality.

The series has received unanimous critical acclaim, currently holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In its five-star review, Empire wrote that the show bravely confronts and processes real-life trauma while maintaining a comedic tone, resulting in a moving and often disturbing viewing experience that will evoke tears of emotion rather than joy or laughter.

The Independent also had positive things to say about the show, describing it as “thought-provoking and unsettling, with a level of maturity that will leave viewers more disturbed than amused.” The Guardian also

According to another individual, “#BabyReindeer is without a doubt one of the most powerful, emotional, and impressive pieces of writing I have ever witnessed. The fact that Richard Gadd had the courage to reenact his own traumatic experience is truly remarkable. He deserves to be recognized with numerous awards.”

Baby Reindeer is currently available for streaming. Additionally, for the month of April, you can discover upcoming shows and recommended true crime documentaries to add to your watch list.
