New Netflix Series: Dead on Arrival After Shocking Viewer Numbers

Despite high expectations, a recent Netflix show has not been meeting performance goals, causing analysts to label it as a “failure”due to unexpectedly low viewership numbers.

Despite the fierce competition, Baby Reindeer continues to dominate the global Netflix top 10 chart, leaving little room for other new releases to gain traction. In fact, one series has already been labeled a failure, given its low viewership in its first week of release.

According to What’s On Netflix, Dead Boy Detectives, a spinoff of the popular Sandman series, has been watched for a total of 22.2 million hours and has received 3.1 million views since it was released on April 25. However, when compared to other English-language shows that were released on a Thursday, the series is seen as being in a state of “limbo”due to its performance in the first four days.

“According to reporter Kasey Moore, Dead Boy Detectives’ poor start in Netflix top 10s may result in its failure. It seems that young adult fantasy shows on Netflix continue to face tough challenges.”

Instead of using the number of viewers as a measure of a show’s success, the platform calculates its viewership and popularity by dividing the total hours watched within a four-day period by the show’s runtime. This is the criteria by which the new Netflix series will be evaluated.

In 2024, well-known films like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Gentlemen, and 3 Body Problem all had a more promising four-day debut, while The Brothers Sun, which has since been canceled, struggled in comparison.

Despite this, the Michelle Yeoh-led drama still received a higher score than Dead Boy Detectives, indicating that it may not be good news for the latter in the future.

One fan on X/Twitter shared their opinion on the trend of teen fantasy ratings flops like Half Bad, Lockwood & Co, The Irregulars, The Imperfects, and Dead Boy Detectives. They suggested that it may be time to stop producing these shows, as they never seem to make it past the first season.

Similarly, Netflix has renewed the parent series The Sandman in 2022 and is currently in the process of producing new episodes.
