Despite having a talented cast and receiving positive reviews from critics, Netflix’s Ripley has not achieved a record worth boasting about.
The monochromatic series is adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, which follows the journey of a struggling scammer hired by a well-to-do family to retrieve their rebellious son… However, their plan goes awry.
According to a report by What’s On Netflix, it was predicted that Ripley would not perform well, and the numbers support this claim. In its first four days, the limited series only received 2.3M complete viewing equivalents (CVEs), making it the worst opening for a Thursday release. Netflix calculates CVEs by dividing the total hours viewed by the runtime of the series or movie.
Ripley did not fare well in comparison to other Netflix series, ranking at the bottom of the list when compared to hits like Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and Griselda. Even the Australian coming-of-age series, Boy Swallows Universe, outperformed it with 3.6M CVEs.
Despite the relatively low viewership numbers, Ripley continues to hold its own in the Top 10 of Netflix charts with 16,900,000 hours viewed. It remains uncertain whether these numbers will affect Netflix’s interest in developing a second season of Ripley. The series is based on the first book in a total of five written by Highsmith.
