After facing disappointment with the low ratings of “Chicken Nugget”and “Goodbye Earth”, Netflix decided to launch their latest original series, “The 8 Show”. Despite initial assumptions that it would be a variety show similar to “Physical: 100”, it turned out to be a suspenseful and thrilling survival drama, drawing comparisons to the popular series “Squid Game”.
On May 17th, “The 8 Show”premiered all 8 episodes and quickly became a trending topic. The series follows the story of 8 individuals who are unknowingly participating in a survival game organized by an unknown entity. These 8 people all have one thing in common – they are dissatisfied with their current lives and some have even considered death. Despite this, they are all willing to take part in the game, whether it be for the chance to win a large sum of money or simply for entertainment. In the specially constructed game location, the participants take turns selecting the floor they wish to inhabit. Each floor represents a different level, with money accumulating by the minute. To continue playing and potentially earn a large sum of money, the players must understand the rules of the game, including navigating to the restroom, budgeting for expensive items, and managing their earnings. The game only concludes when a player dies, ensuring the safety of all participants and giving anyone the chance to emerge as the winner based on their personal earnings. However, as the players become more engrossed in the game, they become increasingly competitive, driven by the discovery of different levels on each floor.
Similar to “Squid Game”, “The 8 Show”also offers intriguing survival game scenarios to its audience, despite having a smaller cast and less extravagant scenes. The characters are intricately crafted with well-defined backgrounds and personalities. Each one represents a certain social class, highlighting themes of societal divisions, misunderstanding, and envy. While some of their stories may evoke frustration, others elicit sympathy from viewers. Overall, the plot is more compelling than most recent Netflix series and holds the attention of viewers until the very end.
Despite initial concerns about Ryu Jun-yeol’s personal issues affecting the performance of the drama, viewers were pleasantly surprised by the exceptional acting of all 8 cast members. Trustworthy actors including Chun Woo-hee, Park Jung-min, and Bae Seong-woo perfectly portrayed the 8 participants. In particular, Ryu Jun-yeol’s role as the protagonist was crucial in introducing the story and setting the tone for the game. Despite initial criticism, his talent and skillful portrayal of the character won over viewers and silenced any doubts about his abilities. His strong acting and emotional expressions in the drama were highly praised, proving that no one could deny his talent.
