New Release: Reminiscence – Hugh Jackman Sci-Fi Film on Netflix

After his success in Deadpool and Wolverine, Hugh Jackman continues to soar as Netflix adds a polarizing thriller featuring the X-Men actor to its collection.

Despite losing his title as the longest-running Marvel movie actor, Jackman’s performance as Wolverine is not his only impressive role.

In addition to his reputation for creating musicals such as Les Misérables and The Greatest Showman, he has also produced several standalone projects, including the 2021 film Reminiscence.

Currently (August 6), the sci-fi film, which features Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson, can be streamed on Netflix in the US.

Reminiscence, directed by Lisa Joy, one of the co-creators of Westworld, takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where individuals seek solace from their harsh present by immersing themselves in nostalgic memories.

Jackman portrays Nick Bannister, a mind detective whose entire existence is altered after crossing paths with Mae (Ferguson), prompting him to unveil unsettling realities about their society and his own identity.

Despite its interesting concept, Reminiscence was met with disappointment from both viewers and reviewers, receiving a 37% and 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.

According to Ready Steady Cut, Reminiscence is a diluted sci-fi neo-noir that drags on with a romance that quickly loses its appeal, despite the excellent performances by Jackman and Ferguson.

According to the Guardian, the film “Reminiscence”was described as a “thinly plotted noir”that heavily borrows from Christopher Nolan’s style, and ultimately falls apart due to its own influences.

Despite mixed opinions among viewers, one individual commented, “The acting was good and the production was well done. However, the poorly executed story resulted in boredom. Honestly, it wasn’t worth it.”

On the opposite side of the fence, another person commented, “I really enjoyed the unique approach to the film noir genre. The cinematography was gorgeous! Rebecca Ferguson deserves more recognition.”

Despite the creators’ efforts, Reminiscence was a commercial failure upon its initial release, generating a mere $16 million in global revenue compared to its reported budget of $54 million.

Despite its availability on Netflix, there is a high possibility that the movie will appear on the streaming service’s Top 10 chart in the coming days.
