New Weapon Types in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree: Odachi, Martial Arts, and More

There are many reasons to be excited for Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, but the main one is the introduction of a series of new weapon types. Here’s what we know about them.

The Elden Ring DLC trailer has finally been released and fans have been speculating wildly about Shadow of the Erdtree. Everyone has their theories about the mysterious Messmer the Impaler and whether he will be the final boss or not.

Of course, there are concrete details that we know thanks to FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki. For example, we know that the area where the DLC takes place will be larger than Necrolimbe.

Thanks to an interview with Famitsu, we also know that there will be eight new weapon types in the Elden Ring DLC. While we don’t have all the details, Miyazaki has confirmed five. Here are the ones we currently know.

DLC d’Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree: 8 nouveaux types d’armes

In that Famitsu interview mentioned earlier, Miyazaki gave Elden Ring fans something to be excited about. “Eight new weapon types will be added. Of course, there are also additions to existing weapon types,” he said.

Of these eight new weapon types arriving in Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, here are the ones he’s mentioned so far.

Disaster

Described by Miyazaki as “fairly classic, large Japanese katanas”, Elden Ring’s Odachi appear to function as a sort of large sword variant for Katanas. Although we already have Yura’s Nagikiba in the base game, which is much larger than the other Katanas in Elden Ring, it does not have its own classification like these new swords.

This is good news for players who like the aesthetic and built-in bleed effect of Katanas, but want a little more power. Hopefully this extra size will result in more damage.

Dueling Shields

Another of the eight new weapon types in the Elden Ring DLC are what Miyazaki called “Duel Shields.”This new type of weapon appears in the trailer and can be seen in action during a fight with Messmer the Impaler.

They resemble an elongated rectangular shield with two protruding blades at each end, similar to the popular Twinblade weapon type. Apparently, the weapon will have offensive and defensive capabilities.

Reverse Hand Swords

There is some dispute around the translation of this particular weapon, which has been referred to as both “Gyakute ken”and “Sakatemochi”. However, what is not in question is their function.

These Reverse Hand or Reverse Grip swords are held so that the blades extend outward toward the elbow. They can be seen in action in the trailer and appear to have a fighting style that will require Dexterity to wield.

Throwing Daggers

Yes, you can already craft some disposable blades, but from what Myazaki described, Throwing Daggers will be a completely new weapon that can be permanently equipped. Apparently, they “turn all attacks into throws.”

Like some of the other types of weapons mentioned by Miyazaki, they can be seen in the trailer when a tarnished repeatedly throws them at an enemy. Another weapon that seems to be focused on Dexterity.

Martial Arts

The last type of weapons confirmed by Miyazaki are Martial Arts. While these aren’t technically weapons, they will make your Terni monk-like.

Whether or not you need to equip anything for this style of fighting remains to be seen but the elaborate spinning kick shown in the trailer was a highlight. Players are already planning a fist-to-fist clash with Horah Loux.

So here are the new weapon types in Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC which were named and confirmed directly by Miyazaki. The remaining three were described as “more unique and highly innovative” .

We saw a large throwable pot and a rapid-fire crossbow, but whether or not these are new weapon types remains to be confirmed. We will update this article as soon as new information emerges about the Elden Ring DLC.
