New Widowmaker Skin for World of Warcraft x Overwatch 2 collaboration

In honor of World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary, Blizzard has announced that they will be releasing a crossover skin for Widowmaker and Sylvanas in Overwatch 2 during Season 12.

At Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, Johanna Faries, President of Blizzard Entertainment, unveiled the concept art live on stage to announce the collaboration between the developers.

While the official anniversary date for World of Warcraft is November 23, Faries announced on stage that players could anticipate this crossover happening in September, prior to the conclusion of Season 12.

The X account for Overwatch proceeded to share a sneak peek of the skin, giving fans a glimpse of Widowmaker’s transformation into Sylvanas through her outfit.

Fans were already aware of the impending collaboration, as it had been hinted at in the Overwatch 2 Season 12 trailer which showcased a glimpse of the legendary Frostmourne sword from World of Warcraft. Players familiar with WoW will recognize this weapon as the one wielded by the Lich King in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.

Blizzard’s collaboration with WoW expands beyond Overwatch 2. In fact, Diablo 4 also featured a recent release of World of Warcraft-themed skins in its shop, including one for Sylvanas. Surprisingly, a datamine from Diablo 4’s Season 5 PTR uncovered the Frostmourne sword, the same weapon found in WoW.

Responses to the post on X featuring the illustration primarily consisted of fans expressing their admiration for the stunning skin. One fan even declared it as the “most exceptional skin in the game.”

Another comment expressed joy that this DPS hero was receiving skins, stating “I’m thrilled about this, Widowmaker definitely needed more skins.”

Despite the excitement for Widowmaker’s new look, there were still some players who expressed concern about the price of the upcoming skin. One fan commented, “A 30 dollar skin for Sylvanas? Looks like I’ll be skipping this one too.”

Both Overwatch 2 and WoW fans will need to exercise patience as they wait for this crossover skin to become available, as well as for any potential future crossover cosmetics that may be in development.
