NewJeans Accused of Copying During Debut: Japanese Girl Group Alleges Plagiarism

The Korean forum “theqoo”published a topic on the afternoon of April 23, comparing NewJeans’ debut MV “Attention”with the MV of a Japanese girl group. In just a few hours, the topic garnered over 40,000 views and nearly 500 comments.

Netizens were especially intrigued by the “Body & Soul”music video released by Japanese girl group SPEED on August 5, 1996. They noticed a striking similarity between this video and the “Attention”music video by NewJeans.

After noticing multiple comparable scenes and Y2K aesthetics in both videos, critics have begun to accuse NewJeans of imitating “SPEED”.

This accusation is most likely a reaction to Min Hee-jin’s recent accusation that other groups, such as TWS, RIIZE, and ILLIT, have “stolen”the Y2K concept from NewJeans. This further confirms that the Y2K concept was not exclusively created by Min Hee-jin for NewJeans.

Listed below are a few comments from netizens regarding this accusation:

  • In all honesty, the choreography also appears quite similar haha. If Min Hee-jin is claiming that having long hair and wearing Y2K clothing is a form of plagiarism, wouldn’t this be a significant issue?
  • Min Hee-jin was obviously influenced by concepts like this for NewJeans, and yet she had the guts to accuse ILLIT of plagiarism
  • Although I’m not accusing them of plagiarism, I do believe it was included as a reference.
  • This karma for Min Hee-jin, who made an idiotic remark
  • This is honestly similar
